TEAC E2 Bulk Eraser

Just got a mint TEAC E2 Bulk Eraser and have a question. Would putting a very thin piece of felt on the top of the eraser (to ensure it doesn't scratch the paint (by the reel), interfere with with the magnet and erasing of the tape? Thanks!
