TEAC ME-50 Electret Condenser Microphone

I have two of these TEAC ME-50 Electret Condenser Microphones. It seems they take batteries, but the chamber is wider than a AA and I don't want to mess it up by using a battery with the wrong voltage. Does anyone know what battery these things take?

I found this on the Home Recording forum:
They all use a penlight sized 8.4 volt battery that is no longer available.
A 1.5 volt battery will work but s/n ratio, output, sensitivity are compromised somewhat
