teac reel to reel problem

I recently bought a 1500w and am having an issue with it. i can't get it to play. when it isn't loaded it seems to function perfectly but as soon as i load the tape on it and hit play it gets stuck. it'll act like it's going to play but it's almost like the tension of the tape is too much for it. i'm also interested in finding a manual for this machine if anyone has any idea where i may find something like that. thanks.

one thing to check on theese old TEAC's is the pinch roller tension. If dormant for quite some time, the pinch roller mech. can get stuck, sometimes enough to make users think there nothing wrong, but the pinchroller doesn't engage fully. Try to apply some preassure, and see if it helps. Then belts can be the issue.

Thanks. i tried that to no avail. the capstan is not moving at all. i opened up the back and i can't even see where a belt would go on it. i can spin the capstan by hand, it isn't stuck on anything, i just don't see what is supposed to make it move.

i have no idea what's missing there. i can reach in and touch the back of the capstan and move it with my fingers but otherwise it's completely immobile. also, the rubber stoppers meant to hold the reels on are very loose and fall off when i run it standing up rather than on it's back. is there anything i can do to have a tighter lock on the reels? it throws the reel off completely when the stoppers come off.

The middle motor is the capstan motor - turn the fan on it (grey thingie on the back) and the capstan sould rotate - if not, the belt is broken :)

someone else may remember how to manufacture new reelholders by drilling a hole into something rubber....ish :)

Hard to tell, but it looks like black belt residew on the capstan flywheel. The belt could have rotted off, very typical.

With no tape loaded, move the right tension arm all the way to the left and affix with adhesive tape.

-the middle motor should now spin (does it?)

-the capstan (silver shaft above pinch roller) should also spin. Does it? If not, you need a new capstan belt.

- see if the pinch roller works correctly: hit play. The pinch roller should quickly move up and solidly engage the capstan shaft. Does it?

-Also see if the pinch roller freely moves up and down by hand in the stop mode.

-See if the pinch roller spins freely (by hand) in stop mode.

On this deck it looks like the face plate has to come off in order to see the belt, I could be wrong though as I'm not familiar with this model. Have you removed the face?

got this running correctly this weekend, thanks. i still need to get the rubber caps that hold the reels in place sorted out so i don't have to run it on it's back anymore. any advice on that?

I have that problem with my 4300SX when it goes unused for awhile. I suspect the solenoid gets gummed up with ancient lubricant, but I have never been able to find an answer as to whether it would be safe to clean the solenoid with contact cleaner, or to oil it.
