TEAC X-7R Reel Motor Voltages

I recently acquired a very nice TEAC X-7R reel to reel tape deck. I have replaced the belts and serviced the machine, however the fast-forward and rewind speeds drop as tape winding progresses, to the point that the reels almost come to a stop.

What are the voltages supposed to be on the motors in fast wind mode? I also know that these motors can have dirty commutators, which will require cleaning to alleviate the problem. Thank you in advance

It's been quite some time since I opened up my X7R, (and I have learned a lot about X series decks since purchase of my X7R), but the transport is very similar to it's larger brother, the X10R. I have addressed a slow wind issue on my X1000R (again, very similar dual capstan designs). If the tape tension is too low, this will be one symptom. There are adjustment pots, but to accurately set tension, a tentletometer is specified. There is an X1000R thread where TapeTech described a possible way to determine tape tension without the tentlemoter. I would search for Teac x1000 in subject lines.

Another place to look, is the voltage across the tape tachs (one for each direction). They should measure 5v when a tach segment is in the sensor path. Adjustment literally involves bending of a bracket for the tach assembly. Again, this was discussed in threads on the X1000R decks.

Many thanks for your prompt reply. I will take a look at the X-1000R forums and see what is mentioned. Also, I failed to state in my original post that I was inquiring about the voltages applied to the motors in fast-wind mode. From reading about the X-7R, I have learned that the commutators of the reel motors get dirty with conductive residue from the brushes and will cause the motors to slow down. I am going to take my X-7R back apart (just changed the belts) and clean the motors. . . .

The X-7R does not have the tension control servo feature and therefore the adjustments you mentioned that are available on the X-1000R are not available on the X-7R.

Thanks for the correction. I wrote without verifying that my statements applied.

Seems cleaning of the motors is a reasonable path for the OP, Steve. Do clean the slots of the commutator when its apart. I failed to do this step in my first attempt at reviving a weak motor.
 
Thank you Dhnash and Oldvinyldude for the additional information. I will be sure and not only clean the commutators, but also clean between the segments as this is reportedly where additional problems with motor torque can arise.
