Tech talk: Unit throughput

As a budding tech in a small shop, I’m interested to get feedback “Tech talk” from other techs about this business and things to watch out for.

One thing I like to monitor is my output rate of repairs. Last six months of last year I turned 110 units.

Main questions are:
1. How do you measure yourself for repair throughout?
2. What’s the range of numbers of units that folks can get through and still keep a reasonable level of quality?
3. How to gauge yourself when you are spending too much time or not enough time on units?

(To head it off, I’m fully prepared for responses about: “That’s not a fair question I only work on UnObtainium 5799s and those are rare beasts.”) I’m working in a shop that gets all kinds of things, random from 15W to 500W, some cassette decks and record players, and most are units from before 1980.

Since I’m just a newbie into this business, I’m not trying to steal any trade secrets, but I wanted to elicit some insights that y’all experienced folks are willing to share.

Each unit is an individual. Each has their unique problems when they come in for a repair, and repairs vary in how involved they are, how complex they are. Some units are easier serviced than others, some units also have reliability issues as they age, worse than others. A case by case basis. And also some units are better engineered than others. Not all units in for repair are equal. Some take more time, and more in depth troubleshooting to repair than others do. Some are more reliable than others. Food for thought. You'll gain this knowledge as your gain experience with diagnosing them/troubleshooting them/repairing them.
