Technical Question about Pinnacle AC 550 speakers and Crossovers and Drivers

All,

I just picked up some Pinnacle AC 550s, untested, for under $20. But, when testing them, on one speaker for sure both the woofer and the tweeter sounded "crackly" and a bit distorted. I have terrible ears, but this is what I'm hearing. So I switched both the woofer and the tweeter over to a set of Pinnacle AC 650s that I had laying about (came from a smoker's home, just can't seem to fully kill the odor, I think I'm gonna part out the drivers). In the 650s both drivers sounded fine. Again, my ears suck, but this is what I'm hearing. I even tried hooking up the 650 woofer to the 550, and, again, it sounded a bit distorted and crackly. So here's my question: Could the crossovers on the AC 550 be bad? That's my tentative conclusion. If that's the situation, then I can confidently part out the drivers. But I want to make sure I get this right. Thoughts? Thanks!!

Yes, it could be the crossovers, or it could be the input terminals. But if they sound fine in the 650s then the drivers are good.

Crossovers in those speakers should be fairly simple, so repair is an option if you're willing.
