technical question - biamping with AU-20000 and BA 2000

Hey guys,

I want to drive my speakers in bi-amping mode with a AU-20000 (for the woofers) and the BA-2000 (for mid and high). I want to spilt the preamp-signal via a Y-adapter and lead it into the two poweramps. Now my question is, if the two ways play on the same volumelevel, or should I have to worry that the woofer are louder than the other part of the speakers and cannot be regulated to the same volumelevel.

Maybe someone runs this setup, too. Please let me know your exreiences.

Hope you can follow me, foreign language ant technical phrases..........not easy:worried:

here you can find technical data of the

AU-20000

and the BA-2000

Hi Sascha

Since the two power amps have both different input sensitivity as well as output power rating, I would worry about the risk for unbalanced sound levels.

However, to get the full advantage of a bi amping setup, you should use an electronic cross over, and these comes often with individual level adjustment; this will solve your problem.

Remember when choosing cross-over frequencies on the electronic cross-over, to adjust it to an octave over (for the low-pass) resp. under (for the high-pass) the loudspeaker cross-over frequency, to give the loudspeakers' cross-over something to "work with" at the cross-over frequency i.e. if the loudspeaker cross-over frequency is 200 Hz, set the electronic cross-over to 100 Hz and 400 Hz.

Thank you Klaus!

the electronic crossover should be the best way. Could you propose a special model?

Hi Sascha

Given your location, Behringer could be worth while looking at. You often need a three way cross-over to be able to adjust the highpass and lowpass part at different frequencies, beware of that. Behringers digital filter might be the best choice: Behringer DCX2496 Ultra-Drive Pro Digital Crossover System, available at 269€ in Germany.

I was just fixing to ask this question, Sascha. I agree that a electronic active crossover is optimal.

Another question along the same lines for anyone able to answer:

If I run my AU-11000 with a BA-2000 connected to the preamp outs, without disconnecting the 11000 amplifier section (with the switch)... will that hurt anything? I want to bi-amp with this setup, don't have any Y-connectors. Anybody, anybody...:scratch2:

Bi-amping

Hi SuiDog

I've got the AU 11000 and BA 2000 and have bi-amped with these without any problem. What I don't have are crossovers. There was no problem, but given the low volume listening levels I typically use, and the lack of crossovers, I can't say that I heard any difference. Let us know what you think. You don't need Y connectors. Just run the pre-amp out from the AU 11000 to the BA 2000 inputs.

So, Marc and Sascha, I connected my BA-2000 and AU-11000 and it works great. So I connected the BA-2000 to the preamp out on the AU-20000, and left the switch in the connected position. I connected equal speakers; one to the left channel of the BA-2000, and the other to the right channel of the 20000. The 20000 was notably louder than the BA-2000. When I got the 20000 needles bouncing in the red, so were the BA-2000 needles. So I had 170 W from the big boy, and 110 W from the BA-2000. Now I've done a bit of bi-amping using passive crossovers, and the mids and tweets I've used require much less power than the bass system. So I think this would have worked in those cases. YMMV

In the end, an active crossover would be the ultimate setup. Do some searching here, there are some great systems.

Hey Matt,

many thanks for testing the bi-amping setup with the AU-20000 and the BA-2000. Maybe I can do this in the future too ;). Hope so......
Great to need no Y-connectors.

best regards

Sascha
