Technics 1200mk2 worth $250?

Only to someone not savy enough or too impatient to research.
Obviously but the point I'm inferring is not so much the monetary appreciation, but that the SL-1200 value can easily be multiplied at relatively minimal cost and effort.

I guess, but it would be hard for me to justify putting money into an SL1200, especially a beat up one when Kenwoods like the table I posted above come available with a bit of patience and research as I said.

still odd that table hasnt sold yet being in nyc. lots of dj's there and lots of salvageable parts here..At 200 or so a bargain considering the parts that could be harvested...
Most likely it looks worse in person and sent potential buyers running away.
Of course there is a possibility of making a buck or two on it or even fixing it and keeping it. Maybe I am too old but I would rather buy something that someone cherished for good money than one someone tried to kill at a bargain price. Old and needing work is not as bad as abused. Just my two cents.

This would send me running the opposite direction in a hurry. Even if platter can be replaced..... did that hard of a hit cause other damage? PASS.

Alright all. So, maybe despite my better judgment, I ended up picking it up. Was pretty wary when the seller pled ignorance and said he bought it that way (with the “dent”), but he also said that he’d used it for years with that platter without trouble. It played fine in a demo, too. Tone arm balances and doesn’t seem to be off in any way, and there’s no visible damage to the circuitry from the dent. Not even a mark on the plastic covering beneath it. Seems like it just needs some cleaning up. Have to say I’m feeling good about this purchase. Now to decide which cart to put on it...

Have fun.

Well, as long as it works then you did ok for the price.
I'd imagine that there's no way the platter was installed when the impact happened, otherwise the bearing, spindle and motor would have been badly damaged.
There's a guy on LA Craigslist selling a 1200 dust cover and hinges for something like $50 if you're interested in those parts (no affiliation).

Could be the platter came from another table that was destroyed, and this table needed one.

That actually would make sense. I've seen these tables get beat to hell and back in all sorts of ways over the years, including one getting tossed off a third story balcony (it landed in a bush and still worked fine when the owner sobered up the next day and brought it back inside). Could be the guy built a table out of take off parts he had lying around.
As long as it keeps speed and the spindle and tone arm bearings aren't wonky it should make an ok player.
