Technics 1300 mk1 - spring?

I have a technics 1300 mk1 that was having some issues, so I took it apart. Now I have a spring leftover and I'm not sure where it goes.

The original problem was that the 'start' switch would cause the tonearm to lift, move to the center, then quickly return to the arm holder. If I manually placed the arm on the record I only got sound out of one channel. I read some articles in here and thought it may be gunked up greaae.

I have taken the table apart and found that the tonearm cables are exposed in a few places. I plan to rewire at some point but for now shortened the cable since there was some excess. I'm hoping this fixes the channel issue.

Whike taking it apart the return mechnasim plastic parts fell out. The locking collar was missing on two of the tree knob slelectors. After looking at the service manual and getting some new locking collars, the return mechnasim should now be put back together.

The problem I have is that a small spring fell out of a part. I found the service manual, but I am not seeing where the spring would go. It seemed to have fallen out of the side of a plastic piece of the return mechanism. Using star and stop seems to work now. I don't know if it's related to the missing spring but I can't seem to set the record size or number of repeats. The size selector doesn't lock in a position. The number of repeats can be in R or 0 position (what does R stand for anyways?).

Any ideas on where this spring may have come from?

R stands for repeat. In this position it will play the side over and over (I believe) until you turn it off.

There are at least 3 springs I can see in the SM. Check figure 2 in the SD7407-418 service manual It's probably the one on the Repeat Pawl, but perhaps the smaller one above it near the Control Latch

Thanks. I looked it over again and everywhere I could see a spring in the service manual, a spring was in place. The disc select size doesn't seem to work but I can't see a place for a spring on that arm.

The tonearm wires are totally shot. One wire had several exposed spots. Another nearly disintegrated when I moved it. Is there a recommended length for the wires? It seems like it had more excess than my 1200 m3d.

Your mean the RCA cables? In general you should keep these relatively short and preferably shielded, low-capacitance wires. 3-4 feet is ok and normal.

If you are replacing them a good source of cable that has the right characterics is RGB component video cable. Those are usually easily found cheaply these days. Strip one wire away and cut to length. The only problem with this stuff is that it is typically fatter than the ones you are taking off and might not fit through the grommet very easily.

I need to replave both the RCA cables and the tonearm wiring. The wires from the tonearm are not soldered on to the PCB anymore and are too brittle to work with.
