Technics 270C cart, does Nagaoka JN-P110 fit?

First and foremost hello to all members.

I'm an 80s metal collector from Finland. I'm rather new on vinyl format since I was collecting CD side since the teenages, still do, but I've recently switched my interest towards vinyl more due I feel it's nicer collectible item with it's own sound.

I'm rather newbie on whatever comes into turntable aspect of things so bare with me.

I recently came across Technics SL303 turntable on flea market and decided to grab it up for a replacement option to my SL-BD20 which I also got as second hand as my first player for vinyls (works fully). SL303 automated features do not work, except queuing lever, but plays records otherwise fine.

The turntable (SL303) looked to have original 270C cart and probably original needle.

So I quickly cleaned the needle with rubbing alcohol after buying the turntable, not sure if it caused the issue.. first all things were fine and it sounded nice, but few days after I look to the needle and it seems to be twisted pointing non-forward. I try to twist it carefully. Play a record. Later on notice it's again pointing non-direct. This time when I touch it slightly, the needle falls literally off (cut from the very bottom of the visible part of it).

TO THE PROBLEM: SO NOW I NEED REPLACEMENT STYLYS.
I have no stylus knowledge whatsoever, of types and such. I'd like to get one quick, sooner the better. So one option to get rather quickly is Nagaoka JN-P110. Seems to be commonly available in Finland at the moment.

Can anyone help me out and comment if this stylus fits into the original Technics 270C cart? :)

Kinda bummed about the fallen off original styli 'cause I managed to use it only few days, and it sounded pretty good on my system! Overall I felt SL303 sounded better than my pre-owned SLBD20 with both having original setup.

Yeah, I'm in Finland. I will check them out. My budget is about 100 euros max. I'd like solid stylus, nevertheless. On SL-BD20 turntable I tried one replacement cart/stylus by Audio Technica and to my ears it sounded worse than original cart/stylus for old school metal, so I just left it as a backup. Lol. It was bit too bright at high and weaker mids.

Nagaoka came to my mind by reading another topic where they were recommending Nagaoka needles as replacement needle for Technics 270C cart by sound and performance, but it was different model than my above stated JN-P110 thus I wonder if anyone has knowledge of that one. If it fits but doesn't have much advance over the given options then of course it doesn't matter.

Thanks for recommendations. I'm eager to get stylus for I just got of few nice used vinyls to my collection added and styli decided to break just then haha. I'm in pain. Not gonna use rubbing alcohol to clean stylus tip again that's for sure.

This hyper-elliptical looks interesting. May considering stretching the budget a bit..

The Thakker hyperelliptical will be a great choice. The EPS/EPC 270 is really popular in Europe.
 
To answer your original question, it doesn't matter whether the Nagaoka JN-P110 fits the Technics EPC-270C or not, because the Nagaoka stylus has no magnet in it-- it's an induced-magnet design-- and the Technics requires a stylus with a magnet in it (I own both). You're on the right track with the Technics suggestions.

Yes, there are some moving-magnet Excel and Nagaoka/Jewel Tone styli that will fit the 270C, but I don't know if you'd have access to them in Finland. UPDATE: Here's one possibility I was recently reminded of, Shure's old M93E:

I had an SL-BD20 back in the 80's. The SL 303 looks more substantial.

JICO have elliptical and SAS styluses available. I have the elliptical (best bang for buck) on my 270C and it sounds great.

The Thakker hyperelliptical that the OP is planning on buying is a JICO.

EVG has a nude elliptical for it:

Well I decided to go with the above mentioned: EPS 270 HE Nadel für Technics / National EPC-270 C / 270CII - Made in Japan from Thakker.

Thanks for the tips. Especially since I avoided buying that first post's stylus which wouldn't had fit because of no magnet.

Blow for the budget but oh well. :p I don't have high-end equipment, far from it. But even with this, I can definitely hear sound characteristics change when I changed needle for example on SLBD-20 (in that case I think it turned worse on certain areas), when I compare the very same release of vinyl VS. CD, when I compare original vinyl VS. certain reissue vinyl etc. :) I hope this stylus from Thakker guarantees hours and hours of good sounding play for mainly 80s heavy metal vinyls. My recently acquired Savatage, Warhead and Battleaxe vinyls wait to be played!

By the way, how much faster spinning speed do you consider acceptable on turntable? Measured by phone, I get around ~33.50rpm on both of my Technics players which is slightly too fast. Another was a little faster, even, which I had to use some tricks to slow it down a bit (down to 33.50.). Initially I heard the different pitch and it was very easy to detect comparing song from a vinyl to one playing from Youtube, but not so much anymore.

EDIT 1: Perhaps SL303 would need replacement belt too, even if it doesn't help reducing speed, the current one might be ancient.

EDIT 2: I ordered SL303 replacement belt from Thakker as well, gonna see how it affects.

Wonder if SL303 has speed (pitch) tuning knobs. Wish I had SL303 manual. SLD-303 I manual could find, but it seems quite a bit different turntable than plain SL303. For example SLD-303 seems to have 2 rubber cover protected screws on bottom of the arm which are used to set automatic play and automatic return positions, but SL303 only has one similar rubber cover protected screw there, so I have no clue which of these functions it's used for, automatic return or play?

SLD-303 seems to have pitch control in the front deck near 33rpm and 45rpm speed settings, but SL303 seems to be missing it. There are 3 screws next to the turntable motor pulley (is that the right word?) under the platter... I was wondering whether they have anything to do with pitch control but I cannot find any info so I won't be messing with them for now.

Yeah, maybe the pitch control screws are somewhere underside the turntable beneath the bottom cover if they exist. Would be surprised if there were none since so many other variations of the model released around the same time have pitch control of some sort.

Search for an owners manual online. I would imagine the pitch controls would have a single slot.

I will have to try searching again later. I checked through vinylengine but but the library had all other 303 type models except the basic SL303, including SL-D303, SL-Q303 and SL-B303. Mine says just SL303. Checking quickly they all seem quite different than basic SL303. They have more functions on the front panel and stuff, although the deck shape/dimensions, arm etc. seem similar. O well.
 
Similar belt drive Technics have a speed adjustment potentiometer on the circuit board, that you can only access by removing the base.

20200910_024100_polarr.jpg The new stylus in place. I'm happy so far. Sounds clean, detailed, and not overly bright on metal for my ears. Checked some C.C. Catch and LASERDANCE, as well, and sounded great.

It looks like I don't have to fiddle around with the potentiometers, either. :) I ordered two belts from Thakker for SL303 (one for backup), and after switching this the speed looks to be on spot without any extra trickery. I don't have better measurement than phone RPM calculator, but it now gives 33.32-33.39rpm when I place it evenly on record close as possible to center (before 33.50, sometimes it was bit over too before). The seems pretty much even with digital formats now if I compare.

Need to be very careful with the player though as it lacks dust cover and ofc it doesn't have automated functions working other than cueuing lever. My old SL-BD20's dust cover is intact. Maybe I could remove it and use it on SL303. Both players' hinges are broken though, so that'd mean buying replacement hinges from somewhere.. unless both have 1 working one and they fit to same cover. Need to check out later.
