Technics 5460 dead channel

Friend of mine has a 5460 with a 'dead' left channel. He said theres nothing from the speakers or the headphones on the left side. Its not a dirty switch issue. Already checked that. I told him to check DC offset and the good channel is around 60 mv.

However, the bad channel is showing 12.7 volts DC!!!!!:yikes:

I was there when he fired it up with speakers connected and it did sound dead, no buzzing, and it was on for a few minutes like this. Shouldnt it have fried a speaker in that time?

Im thinking its the outputs but i havent had a chance to look at it yet. Could anything else cause this???

Sight unseen I'd have to say it is an issue in the cktry driving the ouchputs, as a shorted ouchput would give you a much greater voltage reading--more along the order of 50 volts or so.

And then again this rcvr could employ a hybrid IC for final....

Best thing to do if you are not familiar with squalid state service work is to hand the rig over to a pro.

Otherwise open the covers and start looking for charred resistors, etc.... :(

No easy answer with the info you give thus far.... :dunno:
