I bought a Technics SL-23 turntable, and it played fine when the guy connected it at the store. I took it home and then found out that the needle was damaged, probably my fault, so I bought a new one and replaced the broken one.
I have power speakers, which worked fine with my previous turntable.
My previous turntable (Philips 320) had no ground connection, but this one does.
I connected the RCA cables from the turntable to my speakers, and tried playing something. The music was playing but there was a low humming noise in the background.
Touching the loose ground end, I confirmed that it influences that hum, so it must be something in the ground cable. I then proceeded to buy a standard TC-400GL preamp, which I connected between the turntable and my speakers to further amplify the sound and perhaps get rid of the hum.
During my trials, I accidentally tore one of the RCA cable heads, so I went and got them replaced with a pair of pretty good cables. The guy at the repair shop dismantled the old ones and attached them to the cartridge from inside the turntable.
So now I've got decent RCA cables, a pre-amp, and power speakers.
I turned on the turntable and speakers, and connected the preamp, but there is still a hum. Now it's even louder because of the preamp I'm guessing.
To troubleshoot, I noticed a few things:
1) If I touch the turntable arm with my hand, anywhere on the arm itself, the hum gets louder.
2) Even if I remove the needle head from the arm, the hum persists
3) If I touch the body of the preamp with my hand, the hum gets louder.
4) My power speakers have Bluetooth as well, and if I switch to the Bluetooth mode then the humming stops.
Does anyone have any idea where the issue might be? Should I dismantle the ground cable completely? Where is the problem...?
