Technics Linear Phase Speaker fans......

UltraVintage

Addicted to the Vintage
I know that there are some Technics Linear Phase Speaker fans here, as I remember seeing some of the models listed in the best speakers of the 70's thread. What do you think of the Technics SB-6060 speakers listed on Slebay right now? It seems that is a model there isnt a lot of info out on the web about? The condition looks pretty decent. They are close to me, are they worth picking up, and what about the price? How good does this line of Technics speakers really sound?

I was thinking that they may be close to the 7000's or 7070's. According to the vintage technics site, they have a 12"w, 4"m, and 1"t and cost $700 for the pair new. The SB-7000A was 13.75"W, 4.75"m, 1.25"t and the SB-7070 was 13.75"w, 2 4"w and a 6"w, and a 1"t.

For that price I thought that they may be worth a try. Escpecially since they are close to me and not much decent shows up in this area compared to other areas of the country.

I like vintage Technics gear, but are the linear phase speakers really something special though?

Any other owners of the Technics Linear Phase speakers?

7000a owner here. All original and it's this winter's project to recap and restore them as good as my abilities allow.
I like these speakers very much in their settings which is somewhat nearfield. I have them on some 18" stands which seemed to help out a bit. They image beautifully and are quite pleasant to listen to no matter what drive them with. Currently they're hooked up to an Audible Illusion tubed pre and a 350 watt Carver T amp.
I almost overlooked these fine speakers just because of the lowly technics name. I'm sure glad I didn't as I consider these speakers keepers.

Well, I went ahead and bought them. I am looking forward to seeing how they sound. Definitely cool looking speakers, and a rare model from what little I have found on them. At that price, they are definitely worth a listen!

I'm an owner of Technics' linear speaker systems too – the SB-4500:

They sound pretty good, but I'm missing the midrange frequencies a bit. I'm dreaming of the SB-E100 – I just hope a pair of them will eventually find their way to me! :)

Very cool looking speakers!

I just got my SB-6060's home yesterday, but have not tried them out yet as my schedule is crazy right now. They look really cool looking, in excellent condition, and even have the original manual. Hopefully I will get to test them out today.

I am not sure why the vintage Technics gear doesnt get the respect it deserves, I own several different pieces and find the quality to be excellent when compared to the other great brands of the era. :scratch2:

I think most people associate Technics with things like this…

Just because they don't know that Technics once made absolutely outstanding gear. They just didn't make as much of that stuff like Accuphase, and that's why they are so underrated IMHO.

I think that is it. The junk that was made late 1980's on has tainted the view of the brand name as a whole, unfortunately also affecting the early well-made stuff. :thumbsdn:

Part of the reason many people don't know about what awesome components and speakers Technics made is because they did not market them here as much as overseas. I have several pairs of linear phase speakers starting with the SB-5000A at the bottom (of my collection) to SB-7000A's, to SB-E100's to the very top of the heap with a single SB-10000. My SB-E100's weren't sold in the USA and the SB-10000 was a monster that saw VERY limited sales in the here. Actually, they are about as rare as a dentist whose sole practice is fixing cavities for hens. They were not a big seller in the US, partly due to price ($12,000pr), marketing and size. Looking at a previous posting that pictures them, you can't tell how big they really are, almost four feet tall and wide, weighing in at 310 lbs. Take a look at this AWESOME website, owned by a guy who has many of Technics TRUE top of the line items. You'll see a pair of SB-7000's sitting next to them - dwarfed. http://www.freewebs.com/mondaca/speakerssystem.htm

Having but a single SB-10000 is a feat in its self. I would hazard a guess the second 1 would be near impossible to find other than getting a pair
shipped from japan if they come up.

Is there a story behind the single one you have?

Very cool looking website. Those SB-10000's look amazing. Are my SB-6060's pretty uncommon? I have only found a small amount of info for them, and have yet to find anyone else that owns a pair.

I have still not gotten a chance to really listen to my SB-6060's for an extended period of time just due to current work schedule, but I have tested them out on different kinds of music briefly and they sound amazing. Efficient, great bass, very spacious highs. The stacked configuration just looks cool as well, which doesnt hurt :thmbsp:

Story Behind my Technics SB-10000

The single SB-10000, yep, there is a story.

I found this on ebay last summer and decided to let the auction expire if there weren't any bids. Sure enough, no bids since it was posted incorrectly. Anyone searching for it specifically, would not have found it, I came across it by chance.

It had been purchased new from Technics by Altec Lansing, I'm sure you can guess why. After they were done "using" it, it was either sold or given to an employee. He had it until last summer. I made him an offer after the auction but, he had promised it, along with one of his Altec Lansing speakers, to his cousin. His cousin later changed his mind and it was offered to me. I was fortunate enough to have a trip to San Diego planned for us to visit my wife while she was on loan to a different work facility. I made a slight detour into Los Angeles and picked up what turned out to be a monster - 310lbs.

This is the speaker I originally wanted to buy when I bought my SB-E100's back in 1978 while stationed at Ramstein AB W. Germany. The Technics Rep couldn't give me any information (price, pics, nothing) so I got the 100's. Good thing I didn't wait, I had no idea how pricey they were. The same thing happened with the RS-1800, I got the RS-1700 instead and have never known what the original MSRP of the 1800 was.

That is another great thing about collecting vintage stuff. The amazing journey that the items have been on from new to you :thmbsp: Cool history

i have a pair of 6000A's and like them very much. picked them up with the Technics TX-50 receiver which is also pretty good and cool looking with those large watt meters. No phono output on the TX-50 and have never found a suitable pre with phono output to match it with.
I've only seen one other pair of the 6000A's in my area and they went what I thought was a good deal to some lucky person. My 6000's have been sidelined since I got a mint pair of NS1000M's. I will dust them off someday and get them back in rotation. Their design also gets a lot of comments especially when you remove the tweeter girls.
They can be had for a pretty good price due to their size and lack of awareness.

Not sure if these are in the technics family. But I just picked up a set of MCS 8320 in a trade. Never seen or heard them before. Just hooked them up and I'm really digging them. Great imaging.
