Technics Linear Tracker Help

I use it's predecessor, a Souther SLA-3 carrying an O'fon MC-3 in my 'A' system. A Technics SL-7 LT carrying an O'fon/Digitrac 200 NE is the casual listening back-up TT in the secondary system, a Pioneer PL-L1000 LT carrying a Matsushita strain gauge cart is the primary TT.

You don't want to use grease on that rail. The very lightest coating of light oil is OK but best is to clean it off completely with lighter fluid and then apply a spray dry teflon lubricant. (Spray onto a q-tip and then apply; don't spray the rail directly). Anything that can attract dust is deadly in this location.

oops sorry it wasn't a penny it was a dime which increased my tracking force to 3.x Dime wasn't placed directly at the end of cartridge so the tracking was probably a lil less. Didn't have a problem with my stylus or damaging any of my records. In fact I sold the turntable to my co-worker with the same stylus and no problems with it.
 
Ive searched high and low on google and Audio Karma and Im still in need of advice about my technics sl 5. I found it for free. This site helped me understand how to clean and regrease the old sticky grease on the track rod. Now its tracking fine. The little tracking belt on the far left was broken so I replaced it for 50c at the hardware store. Easy. One more problem...

The record size detector isnt detecting so it goes straight to the 7" place. I cant play 12"s. The manuals recommended on Vinyl Engine dont mention trouble shooting the record size detector. There is spring action in the switch and the plastic itself isnt broken. Can this be fixed? thanks for your help. Im so close.

I have a similar Technics linear around here somewhere and I forget which model. The only way I got rid of the sibilance was experimenting with the phono cables. I believe I finally used some component video cables which helped to tame it overall. One thing that didn't help was a few of the P-mount cartridges I had did not measure well between the channels and I forget how I did that. Finding one in good balance made a difference as well. I set aside to dig in to it in more detail but got side tracked on so many other things I've never gotten back to it. When it was working though it sounded wonderful. I certainly enjoyed it more and competed quite well with some of the many I've auditioned at some of the local stereo shops. Some of them sounded fine at home but not enough to beat it out for the price. Mind you we're talking high dollar TT's here but more around the 500-1000 range there simply wasn't one that did as good overall in comparison.

Hi, Im replying to my own thread for "audio karma". It turns out that the plastic cover (for the pulleys that you see in my photo) is integral to the record size selector. WIthout it the device wont engage. I hadnt reattached because I was still working. A dummy move, but even after I tried it didnt work. its just a bit worn out. Fortunately I just read another thread about adding a piece of 1mm card to the back of the"lid cover" (which is what tipped me off to putting the cover on). Mine started working after taping a chip from the thin end of a wood shim to fatten it up. thanks!

The inside the lid cover record detector selector is also a pain to deal with on the SL-QL1. When I opened up the lid, the outer piece just fell off. It's only being held by a small plastic tab.

Glad you found your problem. Sometimes there are physical things that are wrong that are unique to your device or a small number of them.
