Technics mk2- only 1 channel works in stereo mode

Does stereo mode mono mode mean setting of mode switch on amp?
If that is case then mode switch on amp needs clean or is faulty
Or phono switch I do not have shematic
Clean your switches on amp

i thought the op swapped inputs to amp then other channel worked ? maybe i read it wrong or it wasnt mentioned it was still set to mono ? i might have it there ...

Yes, i am reffering to the switch on the amp/receiver. I have also used 2 different amps, so i know its the TT! Thank you for the suggestion..

The original situation is the fact that only one channel/speaker works when the amp/receiver is in "stereo" mode. When the amp/receiver is in "mono", both channels/speakers work. If i swap inputs to the amp/receiver, the working speaker also swaps when in "stereo". As soon as i switch to "mono" both speakers work.

when you touch the bare wires or connectors all being well you will hear humming in the speakers ..
no danger of electric shocks here ..

Alright,
Completed the wet finger challenge and i only get a sound from the red wire or the top right pin insiide the bayonet. This occurs in stereo and mono. What does it all mean?

Did you check from the bayonet to the RCA's and everything was OK? If so I would be looking at the headshell wires or the pins in there. Apologies if you already did this, but it wasn't clear from the preceding posts. But it does sound like the wiring of your tonearm is OK, so the solutions are simpler now.

Yes, i did in fact check from the bayonet to the RCAs,, and continuity was good all the way around. But i just hookedeverything back up to test, and the problem persists. Still just one speaker in stereo, both speakers in mono.

Well, i have continuity all the way around! I guess thats good news. Any other possibilities you might know?
IF have continuity on all coax wires from table head shell leads to RCAs and you know for FACT that amp is not fault then only thing left is cartridge
Can not be any thing else
BUT and now I contradict self do continuity check with tonearm in different places at tonearm rest and at points over platter
It is possible especially on Technics 1200 small tonearm wire has bad connection at PC board losing contact with arm in play positions because of wire moving
Pull wires off back of cartridge include them when doing continuity check
Fairly common on this machine

With the headshell off do you get continuity between the shield and center pin on the RCA for the bad channel?

Correct thinking that is why I suggest to him check ENTIRE run include the head shell leads
But need to check with entire circuit intact may both check fine apart
You right I have had more than few head shell leads look perfect and have breaks inside
Also while do all this and solve issue short spritz deoxit in bayonet socket and make sure spring loaded pad moves smooth

Thank you for this advice. I need to set up the system again to check it out, BUT i have played multiple albums from beginning to end and still having the same issue....

I have done all these things.. Im pretty frustrated... But my electrical skills are definitely lacking. Im probably scewing up somewhere!

This THREAD is frustrating!
NOT complicated
bluehills5 already share this I try again STEP by STEP
Unplug cartridge wires from cartridge LEAVE HEAD SHELL INSTALLED ON TONEARM FOR TEST
Check CONTNUITY on ALL FOUR circuits this means meter should read ZERO or VERY CLOSE may be 1 or 2 ohms 3 ohms if meter very cheap or old MAXIMUM if meter reads any value above then that is problem circuit same if meter reads INFINITY
L+
L-
R+
R-
Ohm meter connected to head shell lead and corresponding RCA termination either center pin or shield
OK if checking GOOD then MOVE TONEARM repeat at different points over platter
If still checks GOOD
Then verify both channels work on phono amp just switch RCAs like already discussed may be you already done
IF BOTH channels on amp work then only thing left AND your problem

IS CARTRIDGE

IF ANY CONTINUITY CHECK DOES NOT CHECK GOOD THEN PROBLEM IS OPEN CIRCUIT ON THAT CONDUCTOR SIMPLE

REPAIR OPEN CIRCUIT might take little time to locate may be have to open machine MIGHT be broken tonearm wire etc BUT do not cloud mind with what if or HOW TO for now just diagnose DEAD channel CAUSE first

Is it OPEN CIRCUIT or DEAD HARDWARE is first question you want answer to

THIS IS NOT HARD QUESTION TO ANSWER
Take 3 minutes to determine if open circuit and if that is it you may be in for longer repair time
BUT THAT WILL BE NEXT STEP
Cartridge or phono amp obvious change
