Good afternoon, guys. I've been putting together a Technics rack system incorporating the Technics Professional Series w/ three (3) SH-999 racks (hard to come by, for sure), but including other gear that I think they should have included (cassette deck, audio timer, reel to reel, second amp, etc.). Two questions I'm hoping you more knowledgeable folks might have insight on.
1) The Pro Series was advertised with 3 options of turntable. Mine has the SL-1500 with a curiously painted RED lower stage on the plinth. Anybody know what this red paint delineates, or was this a special edition of some sort? The real question here is ... it came w/o cartridge or stylus. Is there a brand/model of cartridge that came standard with this turntable? Lacking an answer to that, can someone that is proficient in this area recommend a high quality replacement that would make this turntable shine (audibly)?
2) I've owned many R2Rs over the years, and have read about specific types of recording tape that are recommended for different machines. The Technics RS-1500 is a terrific deck, and I've had relatively good luck with high bias- type two, Maxell, Scotch 226, and others. My hope is to understand the criteria that makes one brand/model/bias work better (as in, "This machine is set up for TDK 724 High bias, recording tape)". I don't believe this is just a company showing preference for advertising purposes like we see today on far too many products.
I'd like to set this system up to factory recommended status, to achieve the best sound possible. They designed and built this equipment, and I assume they had a great deal of failures and successes in drawing the best possible sound reproduction from their gear before offering it for sale... their reputation and future sales being considered and all. Any input you can give towards this will be highly appreciated, fellas. Thank you much.
