Technics RS-1500 pinch rollers won’t disengage

Hey All,

i accquired this technics rs1500 last week. It was sold to me and working and based on the videos the guy showed me it seemed to be true. Alas it only worked a few days and there are many things I found the guy lied about. Such as, having the deck recapped etc.

Anyway was working ok for a couple of days when suddenly the pinch rollers became stuck in the playback position after the tape finished playing. Seems like the stop function isn’t working properly or something to do with the solenoid. When I power off the pinch rollers spring back to their original position. When I power on it moves back into play.

Any ideas? I have a video I can share

Beautiful, difficult machines; they’re valuable too, so take or send it to a qualified tech.

These units have known issues, one of which is the replacement of some 150 or so (pic not mine) electrolytic capacitors, it’s basically mandatory on them. It’s a holy grail machine for many, so worth the investment in a proper servicing and/or rebuild. It has to be considered that 40 years later this top performer isn’t performing as well as it should, sort of like driving around a GT40 with fouled plugs and a soiled air filter. I’d love to have one.
