Technics RS-TR333: new belts now one side won't play

I just bought and installed new belts in a Technics RS-TR333 dual cassette deck. All was fine for a couple of weeks and suddenly one side [left side] will not play. FF/RW is fine and it seems to play ok in reverse. But if I put a rewound cassette in and press forward play the right side hub doesn't move.

I opened her up and the belts look ok. They've not broken or slipped off. I played a few tapes this morning, cleaned the head with alcohol and a q-tip and the next tape wouldn't play.

Suggestions? Thanks!

I have the deck open right now. Without a tape in the well I put my finger on the sensor that allows me to engage PLAY. If I manually try to move the right take up reel it moves a bit then stops, moves a bit then stops. You can feel it wanting to go but it doesn't.
