Technics SA-5370, no sound from left speaker, Help.

I recently bought a Technics SA-5370 from an auction website (no returns). The receiver is in nearly new condition (little dust, no marks). It appears to work (everything lights up, buttons/knobs work) however, normal sound only comes from the right speaker. When the balance is turned all the left, you can hear very little sound. I tested with headphones and had same results. Test with external input (CD Player) and internal radio, same results. took cover off and inside looks perfect. What else can I check to determine the cause for the lack of volume from the left speaker? Thanks!

Welcome!

Certainly among the first things to check would be the amplifier output fuses, which are on the rear panel under a clear plastic cover.

You might want to try operating the tape monitor switches in and out a few times to see if that restores the left channel sound. If that happens, then probably all the switches and controls would benefit from cleaning.

Once we get past the really simple stuff, it would probably be helpful to give us an idea of what level of electrical troubleshooting you are equipped for. For example, can you use a multimeter?

Cheers,

I checked the back fuses. Opened the cover and looked at internal fuses. They all seem ok. I have an multimeter (and engineering degree). I will try the tape monitor switch and cycle the balance control. But everything looks like new for an old unit. Nothing stands out as broken/melted/burned.

Check fuses with your meter it's not always a visible fault with fuses. As already said clean all switches and pots very well with deoxit .

Deoxit did not fix it. Fuses swapped no change. The left channel makes some sound when the balance is turned all the way left and volume is turned up. Otherwise all I hear is the right. What could I check that would affect only the left?
