Technics SA-800 - Lost AM/FM Reception

Rusty Axle

New Member
I have a Technics SA-800 that works fine, with exception of the AM/FM tuner.

It seems to have no AM or FM reception whatsoever. Reception simply stopped one day.

I stored the system for years and recently unboxed it. It would be fun to have it working again.

Is there any circuit board component that would cause the loss of function?

Thanks in advance for any competent help with this issue.

Welcome to AK!

These symptoms are commonly caused by some failure in the power supply regulator that serves the tuner. For an SA-800, I believe the regulator consists of transistor TR703 and friends. Solder joints on that transistor may have failed due to heat cycling, or the transistor itself may have failed. Or it could be something else entirely, but the regulator circuit is definitely the first thing to check.

Is this enough to go on?

(If it isn't enough to go on, you might want to say a little about what experience, and what equipment, you have for servicing electronics. There are people here who can help regardless of that. Not necessarily me :).)

TR-703 on my Technics SA-800 was bad and also the 470uf capacitor nearby was bad. I had no a.m. or FM reception. Nothing replace these two parts. Radio works perfect now.
