Technics SA-????X

I have this old Realistic STA-47 receiver that I currently use as my main receiver. It is very limited function wise, so I really want a new one. I have had my eye on Technics SA-????X receivers, due to my past good experiences with Technics products. Would, say, the SA-8000X or SA-8500X be as good as/comparable to the Kenwood KR-9600 or KR-9000? And how much would be a good price for a Technics SA-8000X or SA-8500X? I only have about $200 to spend. Or what would be the best buy for that money? Will I ever stop asking questions?

Yes. Thanks in advance for helping with my vanity!

It's a well kept secret but just this once I'll fill you in: If you stop asking questions you'll stop getting answers. Shhhhhhh don't telll:thmbsp:

Hmm... never heard of the SA-800. I'll have to investigate. If I stop asking questions I'll stop getting answers? No way!

For aound your budget, I acquired a Technics SA-5770. It is near totl for Technics. Has a legit 165wpc, one the best onboard tuners yet I've come across in a receiver, and a fine phono stage as well. It really does it all, very very well... WAY under the radar imho, market-wise.

For once I agree with Marko. The SA-5770 is EXCELLENT! I'm planning on getting one myself. They typically go for well under $200.00 on E-Bay. However, Marko is wrong in on respect, it IS a TOTL Receiver.

As for the SA-800, I used to own one and the build quality was a big step down from the SA-5XXX series. The sound was very mid-rangy to my ears, with relatively little punch in the Bass and blurry highs. I did not enjoy listening to it. That's why I dumped mine. It's certainly not a Receiver I would recommend whereas I would recommend the SA-5770 100%. Just let me get mine first. :D

Hmm... It does sound under the radar. None on eBay currently, but I'll keep my eyes open. I like that Technics is pretty much under the radar as a brand, so comparable stuff is cheaper than name-brand (I.E. Kenwood, Marantz). I checked on www.classic-audio.com (great site) and it seems to be just what I would want. No switches either, which is a plus. (I hate the way switches look and it seems a lot of people have contact problems with them.) Keep those suggestions coming!

Browsing on eBay, I found the SA-5560. Anyone know anything about this? It's really cheap, too. Judging by the model number, it seems to be a step down from the SA-5770.

You know, you shouldn't get all hung up on the Technics brand, as the only choice for a new to you vintage receiver. Especially with the budget you have onhand. There's literally tons of possibilities to choose from, but much will depend on your ability to be patient, ramp up your knowledge via the web to understand each individual receiver's inherent abilities better. In fact, imho I recommend you be Open Minded about this, explore and learn for a time, while you nose around the marketplace to get a better feel of what values really are.

Anyone here can recommend some fine receivers from a wide selection of Brands/Makers. If you want a bargain, (and who doesn't, right), you will need to look at some Brands that are more off the radar, so to speak. And in that mode of thinking, I will step forward with an alternative likely lower budget/big bang for the buck choice...something like this>>

http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikko-NR-1415-A...43QQihZ010QQcategoryZ3279QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

But like I said, there's literally tons of choices out there. Hopefully, others can pipe in and suggest a few more. There's LOTS of quality receivers out there. It's up to you to figure out what is good enough for what you have in mind.

No offense intended btw, just trying to communicate in an honest way.

be well

Marko

I really shouldn't get all hung up all on one brand, and I'm not. I just had to start somewhere, so I decided to start with Technics. Finding all the little off-brands are hard, and there is not a good way of determining if it is good or not from my point of view. The one you linked looked nice for what I need, which is not much. I don't need a scope, or 3 tape monitors, or anything uber-fancy. I've never heard of Nikko before, but it seems to be about on par with Technics (gotta get my mind out of that gutter).

Honestly, I should just go to Goodwill and get the heaviest receiver they have :-) (not really) But after all, I did get my CD player and Technics speakers there...

That's cool.

My point was for your $200 budget, it is entirely possible for you to get yourself one wicked vintage receiver! ....and if you don't need much as you say, there's tons of choices

Try doing an Ebay search for 'receiver', and in your advanced search, click the 'find the nearest first' parameter as well as 'title and description'. Whatever is closest to your ZIP pops up, and it is likely you might find something that will do you just fine, and you can possibly avoid Shipping costs and get a genuine bargain.

You can research whatever pops up on your search on the web first, to try and figure out what you're looking at before you bid.

I am running a Panasonic SA 6400X. It seems like you were originally looking for quad. I don't think you can go wrong. The 6800X was the top for this run. You could probably get the 6800X for around $75 including shipping, from Epay. I doubt you would be dissapointed. I would say unless you are in a hurry, wait till spring hits, and hit the Yardsales, and Fleamarkets. And check Craigslist often. When you do find something you like, post what you found. Best of luck.

Yeah, I plan to hit the yard sales as soon as they come around. Good stuff sometimes. The best deal you can get is if the people think it broken. and it turns out to be a blown fuse. We can all dream, can't we? Now, craigslist, never worked with it, but I took a look, and it seems to be a great resource. At this point, it boils down to luck.
