Technics SB-6000A project?

OK...I bought these today for $30. Didnt get a chance to hear them first so my fingers were crossed. Plugged them into my sx650 just hoping the tweeters worked and they do - phew. Woofers need foam which I understand is a real bitch. Even with the woofers rattling like hell I can tell these are an excellent speaker. I think they need more power than the 650 can supply so I'll likely hook them up to my Carver 150x2 and give them another shot. Can't wait to get them working 100 percent.

Be careful about cranking those with no foam on the woofers. You can ruin them that way. I would'nt even play them till they are refoamed if they were mine.

Nice buy.

Yes, good point. Played them for a little bit to see what I was dealing with. They had been in a guys garage for a bit so they've gone through temp and humidity fluctautions. They will be a great addition to the stable for sure. Time to unplug them and get to work. I'll get some pics up to show the before.

They should be a much easier refoam job than the 7000's, since the 6000's have a 12" woofer. I'm curious how a 6000 would do as an Econowave project? :scratch2:

The 7000's have a rubber surround that doesn't need replacing. I wonder if the 6000's did to? Hopefully the po didn't replace them with a non original.

The woofers have the original surrounds (or whats left of them - hard to tell what it is). I've been trying to track down replacement surrounds but cant find exact replacement. Parts express and Simply Speakers (actually talked to this guy) dont have it and said without the right part they would not attempt a refoam even if I sent them the drivers.

I contacted Millersound who will redo both drivers (surround/dust caps) but I don't know exactly what he will use. Millersound comes very highly recommended so I'm sure their work will be top notch, but I dont want to mess with the sound of this very picky linear phase speaker.

Technics calls it a rubberized foam. It can deteriorate, but I think in most cases it's still fine.

"Rubberized foam" now that's a new one on me. The surrounds on mine had no signs of any rot at 35+ years old. Good stuff that rubberized foam:thmbsp:
