Technics SB-E100 Drivers

Today I came across this very peculiar listing, the (body) of the technics SB-E100 for $100? I did some searching and I saw that this speaker is supposed to have horn drivers placed on top, however based off the images it doesnt seem that anything was extracted. How is this even possible? Can I perhaps do something with these? How does one even create this?


If I did purchase this, is it possible to find a pair of replacement drivers or do I need a whole donor machine?

From what I've read replacement mid/tweet horns and electronics would be next to impossible to find used.....even then an expensive investment/venture
If it were me and purchased them I'd keep the cabs ( beautiful) and sell the odd sized woofers to someone who needed them.
Take that money ( I would imagine it would be a good amount ) and build your own ecnowave speakers.
IMHO of course.

I certainly dont have enough experience to build anything close to that, I'll probably look for one of these in one piece or buy it as a spare parts unit.
Theres a bid going on for one in near mint condition ending in 5 hours, I may just give up my sleep and stay up until 4 AM to bring this beautify home.

Irresistible attraction is the only way it should be described.

I see. Side note.... Is there any way I could just use this as a subwoofer? :biggrin:
or is that not how it works...
 
I doubt it as that woofer /system is not intended/designed to reach that low.
Now I personally havent heard this partular speaker system but other high sensitivity types along those lines.
Room placement/gain could contribute to some degree.
I'm sure someone will chime in with much more knowledge on this.

Although it would be quite a shame to tear into these rare birds,.....unless the remainder of the drivers/electronics were relatively affordable ( as for myself ) I stand by my first response.

How low to SVS SB1000 subs go? 15?
 
No idea......I'm sure there are specs online for those.
Best sub I ever owned personally was a Sunfire True MKIi .....this was a couple of decades ago mind you.
Now I never did actual in room measurements on it or any other subs even speakers I've cycled through for that matter.
That being said IIRC Sunfire claimed 18hz I do believe but remember many manufacturers can claim XYZ on specs. So are these taken in an anechoic chamber or real world settings?
I was running Rotel power amps ( 100wpc rms ) at the time using a Yamaha receiver ( still have this old 795a workhorse ) just as a pre/pro to some Rayad towers. Those were a 2 separate cab design....8" 2way uppers with 8" bass modules, upper being sealed and bottoms slot ported.
Sub was set at +6 db in gain ( less than half that was available ) plus set at 35hz on frequency. Again IIRC. This made for a great combo....deep and tight.
While actual numbers can and do matter I'm not too hung up with what's on paper. Let your ears be the judge.
East coast, west coast, flat, forward, laidback, warm, bright, sterile or whatever terms we all use ( guilty myself )to describe any audio gear. Ultimately what works for you and your wallet trumps everything.

What a shame that someone butchered them.

It looks like the only way to bring them back to a working pair is, like you suggested, finding a donor.

But if you were to do that, I think you would be better off just finding and buying a complete and working pair.
 
Based on this thread, they probably discovered that they could make more money shipping the horns to someone than trying to sell the entire thing locally. That's the way it is with big speakers these days.

I was about to purchase a pair of HRS 10’s but someone told me these had Temu quality

The people who bought the parts (assuming that's what happened) probably feel otherwise.

It happens a lot. I see parted out high end speakers all the time on eBay. The problem is that shipping is expensive with large boxes, and speakers are a major PITA to pack properly if you don't have the original packaging. If you don't live in a major metropolitan area then you're going to take a major hit in value when you try to sell them locally. And even then they're a tough sell.

As stated this was a couple of decades ago plus it was a smoking deal at the time. New, open box at Ultimate Electronics closeout IIRC with a 15% off and an additional 10% ( thank you Peyton B. )....ended up just under 7 Benjamin's.
Previous subs were AR, Polk, JB, Def Tech, Mirage....none were their TOTL units mind you.
The only Sunfire piece I ever owned as everything else was way out of my price range. By this time I had already sold all my Carver pieces including a 6250, M500t and TL 3000 ran as a set.
No idea as to what the quality is of any new pieces from this company or any other sub manufacturer.
Heck I don't even own a sub currently as I gave my son a Velodyne which coincidentally was the last one I owned.
Running OB now with no sub as it fits my needs.......for now. YMMV on any particular piece or set up.......Synergy.
As stated before those ears are attached to your head not anyone else's, let them be your guide.
