technics sb7000a question.

Hey, I haven't been on here for few years but anyhoo....

I recently bought pair of technics sb7000a from very nice gentleman. They're in wonderful condition and all drivers working. Speakers sound amazing.

The cabs were already stuffed but I decided to redo thw woofer cab and reapply the wool and bit of polyfill/fiberfill. The midrange cabs have thin(lik an 1/2 to 1") wool with little bit of stuffing so they're fine.

Now, here is the question: what type of foam for the exterior underneath tweeter and midrange and how? I know I read opencell foam but can that be bought locally? I know foam factory has it but, would like try local first. Right now I just have some very thin craft foam sitting underneath the drivers (2 layered for midrange, 1 piece for tweeter).

Another thing is the cabs are in amazing condition so how would I apply the new foam without damaging? Double-sided tape? Dont want something too adhesive.

I read air conditioning filter is opencell but I don't think it's not pretty looking if that makes sense. I want it to be effective and nice looking if possible.

Other then that these are in perfect condition and sound amazing. Very good smooth high end extension, very clean transparent midrange and has enough clean low end extension where no longer need a sub for.has such a beautiful and precise way of imaging and is very dynamic and resolving speakers. Probably my new favorite speaker and can't say how long I been looking for these.

Can't see how people blow the tweeters on these either. People must be clipping the hell out their amps for speakers to blow. Never had one issue with these or other speakers in the past blowing tweeters or any speaker.

Anyhoo, yeeeaaa, so, uhhh, enough rambling.....what you think?

Which foam are you talking about? You refer to it being "stuffed" which leads me to believe you mean internal dampening, but then you talk about appearances, which leads me to believe you refer to something on the exterior.

Clarification, please.

The 7000's have sound dampening material below the midrange as they sit back on the cab above the woofer. this often degrades or pulls free on them over time.
I am very jealous! i love the 7000's so much they are my dream speaker!
I myself have a pair of the 6000's and just today i obtained a pair of Technics sb 660's which are apparently even rarer then the 7000's and sound amazing!
listening to the dark side of the moon on them now :D

As mention from richardsounds, the technics used type foam for exterior underneath the tweeter and midrange. Each driver has it's cab/enclosure. I redid the interior with the wool and polyfill/fiberfill. The exterior needs foam. Want to do it as smoothly as possible. Sorry if I am unclear. Not very good using a phone.

Felt should work as well as the original foam and it should be more pleasing to the eye. Felt is often used by other speaker manufacturers to control diffraction. As a bonus it's easier to adhere to the cabinet surface than foam.

Thanks for the response. I think I can probably get felt anywhere so that saves a lot. I look around tomorrow after I wake up. This only thing I need to do to them. after that im finish.

Yes, I know that they do, I just wasn't sure if that is what the OP was referring to. I replaced the foam on the "deck" of my Technics SB-L200s. You will probably laugh at the "source", but I have been amazed at how much of an improvement it has yielded.

That's good work!

I made this thread cause there is really nothing on these speakers except mostly people asking bout blown tweeters/speaker(s) or It's value. Other then that not much else you can find in the search bar.

I figured since it's been awhile that some more people probably had a chance with these for proper suggestion or new findings but kinda figure I won't find much, even here, probably most likely of the "technics" name.

Yep, Technics is known for cheap rack system speakers, but they made some really great ones too. I wouldn't turn my nose up at a pair of these for example...
