Technics - SE-A5

I am thinking of buying an overseas Technics SE-A5 (from a Google listing). This kinda seems like a bad idea but my audio greed is pulling on me hard.

Are you purchasing from a business or a private party? More risk involved if buying from a private party period.
It would also help if you mention what is the equipment you're thinking of purchasing, especially if you have questions about servicing. So...what is the Technics SE-A5?

It is a 100v unit so would require a transformer. The unit is an amplifier from around 1980. The add if from a private seller/importer.
Why the pull towards the SE-A5? I'll admit it does look nice. I'm guessing you have to pay for shipping, probably from Japan and that won't be cheap. You'll also need to pay for a bucking transformer. Unless the pull for this unit is too great, I'd stick to finding something suitable in the states.

For sure....just like the way it looks.....that my big draw. Also like the big Onkyo Integra units but haven't seen a nice one recently (domestically).

Uhm - for which speakers?

Asking that, because I still remember a public presentation here in Munich around the mid to late 80s. Back then the Saturn-Hansa at the Theresienhöhe presented their new, improved hifi department, and part of that presentation was a demo system with a Technics pre-/power-amp combo, which to me appeared to be the SU-A6MK2 & SE-A5MK2, powering a pair of Infinity RS 1(A/B?). Or rather not powering these, to be more exact, 'cause one could easily hear, that the power-amp would run out of juice at every bass drum beat. And I remember that so well, as I was sitting pretty much in the middle of several rows of chairs, and when I turned around, I saw loudspeaker developer and manufacturer Gerald Gessner - and we would both exchange a roll-eyes and a big grin to comment on the quality of the demonstration.

In other words, to me that power-amp would appear somewhat lacking in terms of load stability - so in case you'd need something for rather demanding speakers, an SE-A5(MK2) might be a questionable choice.

Greetings from Munich!

I actually read that also! I have a pair of ads L1090s that are very stable at around 8ohms so that what I would probably use with that.

I think I talked myself out of the technics. If it landed in my lap, I would go for it, but it doesn’t see really worth it. Right now I have a Rotel rb980bx in this stack which has no issue driving 4 ohm loads so it would probably be a downgrade sound wise. She is a looker though!
