Technics SL-10 vs the SL-J3

How do these compare against each other? They are both Quartz locked and I think you can select the tracks to play on the J3 but which one would you grab if you had the opportunity?

cm: If you compare the weights, an educated guess regarding which is the more substantial model should be pretty easy.

Well, and then the SL-10 also came with a higher quality cartridge, which in addition was a low-output MC - but thanks to the integrated, defeatable MC pre-preamp stage the SL-10 nevertheless only required an MM input. Another difference is that the SL-10 clamps records between the lid and the platter, so that it can also be used in vertical position - and yet another the additional power input (for 12 V(DC)). The SL-10 also still sports the tracking force fine adjustment, which the SL-J3 doesn't sport anymore, iirc. And of course the SL-10 is a much more iconic table, not only being Technics' first linear tracker, but also the first T4P model.

That being said, the SL-J3 isn't bad at all - so while the SL-10 would be preferable, if both exemplars were in good condition, a fully operational SL-J3 might be preferable to a somewhat broken SL-10.

SL10 all day. Do some research on this model and you’ll discover why it holds some significance in audio history. If it has a usable original 310 cartridge you have a TOTL table cartridge combo. This is not even a question for me.

Yep - And I would not kick the SL-7 out of bead for eating crackers either. Some people even prefer the SL-7 over the 10. While only having had the SL-7 I can not agree or disagree with the SL-7 vs SL-10 debate. I do know that the SL-7 I had sounded fantastic. But I was SO damn lucky to have found a new Shure VN45LT cart for it. That cart just pushed the SL-7 to another level.

Well, I found locally a perfectly working SL-J3 and after cleaning it, polishing the dust cover and replacing a rotten support leg it's working marvellously. Looks very cool next to my SP-10 MKII :)

Hopefully, I can acquire the SL-10 one of these days :D

Sweet! I have a J3 with a NOS AT-450 and I love it. I have a bunch of Technics, but this is my fav. So easy to use and it sounds so very good. I hope a SL-10 comes my way if it is even better.

Mine came with an Audio Technica vs235ep which I almost threw away, curious looked it up and came to find out it was second from the TOL that year, .2 x.7 nude tip stylus and when I looked it up under magnification it is like new!! Listening to Riot V right now. :)

The SL-7 and the V15LT is a particularly excellent pairing.
