Technics SL-1300 Suitable Cartridge & Feet

Hi All,

I have been given a Technics SL-1300 turntable that is in good condition, except for the isolation feet and the cartridge. I don’t even know what the cartridge is (no brand evident). I have Deoxit the four speed pots and oiled the motor spindle and the motor holds both speeds very well.

So my questions are:

1) I intend to replace the cartridge, does anyone have recommendations for a suitable cartridge for this turntable? I am thinking of an Ortofon 2M Red or Blue.

2) Any suggestions on replacement isolation feet? I am currently thinking of a set of Isonoe Isolation feet, these will require minor modification to the mounting points, but should fit OK.

Any thoughts on the above would be greatly appreciated.

It would be worth while to post a few close up picture of the cartridge you already have.

There are several cartridge most frequently recommended by AK members.

Audio Technica AT 95E

Audio Technica AT 95VL

Nagaoka MP-110

Shure M 97xE

Maybe one of them may meet your requirement. :music:

Those are great suggestions. I'd also check out Grado. For about the price of the Orto 2m blue, you could get a Grado Gold, and for even less, a Grado Black with an 8MZ stylus, which most claim is even better than the gold. Don't worry... Grados won't hum on your TT.

I have refurbished quite a few of those tables. I am refurbishing one now. As far as a cartridge, under 200 bucks the $70 Shure 97eX is the best bet.

For feet, you can use almost any feet that you see come up on Ebay. The SL 1300-1500 series have a nut on the opposite side of the foot, they don't screw into the base, so you can even buy OEM SL 1200 feet, enlarge the hole in the plastic base (the SL 1200 screws are larger) and buy nuts that will fit the SL 1200 foot and you are good to go. I usually buy feet for other old Techincs, even belt drives and just buy small nuts at Home Depot that fit the screw on the feet.

Hi All,
I have attached a photo of the existing cartridge, looks like a Audio Technica, no idea of the model or is it any good! Any ideas??

That is an Audio Technica AT-3600 variant. Decent entry level conical cartridge. The Ortofons are wayyy better.

May be it is an Audio Technica CN 5625AL cartridge? :scratch2:

I tend to agree, as I am sure that the person who fitted this cartridge just fitted a very basic model.

I am swaying towards the Ortofon 2M Blue, fits my budget nicly and gets some great reviews.

Thanks for your help.

Nagaoka MP-110

What head-shell are you guys using for your Nagaoka MP-110 cartridges?

Do you know if the MP-110 is compatible with the stock Technics head-shell & tonearm on a SL-1200 mk2 ?? - or would it be wiser to buy a Nagaoka cartridge/head-shell combo like this ??

http://www.ln-cc.com/invt/nag0308001col

I ask this question because I've been reading about cartridge & tone-arm compliance compatibilities on this thread below

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=501740&highlight=nagaoka

These compliance compatibilities are confusing and quite technical for a newbie :O

Your advice and/or recommendations as to a good cartridge/head-shell combo for my Technics SL-1200 mk2 would be greatly appreciated :)

(Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread - trying to not start a new one when I don't need to)

I use the Technics and/or a Stanton headshell - can't tell any difference other than the counterweight needs to be adjusted

For feet, i use Vibrapods #2 on my Marantz 6350Q they're cheap and effective.

And for the cartridge, i have a ''stock'' Grado Black, an Ortofon 2M Blue and an Audio- Technica AT95e, and in my opinion, the Blue isn't worth the price difference, not that it's not a good cart, it is, but the AT95e, gives me so much for so little, that it almost makes it a no brainer. The Grado black sounds nice too, but i still prefer the AT95e.

Hope this helps.
