I'l do my best to keep things brief, but this is a longish story and I'm not sure what the key info will be that leads to a solution. The TDLR is in regard to slatted portion on the swing arm that runs under the optical sensor for the auto-return. Are the top and bottom "grates" supposed to be perfectly aligned to allow light straight through? Or are they supposed to offset?
Full story: I picked this up for cheap and discovered it had the cueing issue that they all do. I pulled the broken piece and fixed it up by reinforcing it with a thin metal wire. Reassembled and all was working great except for a drag about half way through a record. I know now that the drag was caused by screwing down the optical sensor too tightly. The friction caused the top grate to pop off. I aligned it the best I could and put a tiny dab of glue down. I can't get the auto-return to function correctly. I'm not sure if it worked correctly before this, but my mistake could definitely be the cause of the current issue. It will not return "automatically" even if I push the tonearm further toward the spindle.
I'VE READ THE SERVICE MANUAL AND ADJUSTED THE END POSITION SCREW. I've also adjusted the slit gap and tried to get the sine wave from TP32 per these instructions.
I can get a waveform, but it's not even at all and jumps all over the place. I can't help but think that the top and bottom plates are misaligned. I've spent soooo maaanny hours on this so far and I just want it done. It's such a good TT and it's fully restored and operational aside from the auto-return. I can't just ignore it.
