Technics SL-150 MK2 with Syntec S-220 Tonearm General Questions

Nice looking and versatile performing set up! I have a SP25 in an AT Probase with Syntec arm. Happily runs a Denon 103. Right now it’s got a Stanton 500 on it. I’ve also run a Shure M44, AT mono’s and my Miyajima Premium Mono BE nicely.

Good luck!

Thanks! The table came with a Stanton 500 installed. I moved it from the stock headshell to my Orsonic AV-1 and added a 3g weight to simulate the weight of a Denon DL-103 just to see if I could still get the arm to balance and track at 2.5g (again, simulating the DL-103). It all seems to work fine and gave me a chance to practice setting up the arm.

My table did not come with the interconnect cable that connects to the base of the tonearm, so I ordered one from eBay. While I wait for it to arrive, I will replace the spindle bearing oil and check the bearings in the tonearm and adjust if necessary. That shouldn't take long and the table will be ready to run as soon as the cable arrives.

MCM Fan there are a few variations of the Stanton 500 cartridge with different stylus, is your 500 the A model?

The cartridge is labeled Stanton 500. The stylus is the D7AL (0.7 mil conical, VTF = 3 - 7g). I also have a second Stanton 500 cartridge with a DE stylus (0.4 x - 0.7 mil elliptical, VTF = 2 - 5g).

I have a Audio Technica ATP-12T tonearm mounted on Technics SP-25 with a Technics plinth that was lightly used in a radio station production room for commercials etc and likewise I chose a Denon DL-103 cartridge for the AT tonearm. DL-103 more appropriate for home use and radio stations that had a technician operating the turntables like in Europe and Japan.

Something to be aware of with the SP-10Mk.II and other Technics tables: there are two platter mats that look identical from the top. One is about twice as thick as the other. I have never figured out exactly which mat was used on which table, I have good condition examples of each. They're the same diameter, and appear to be the same (or at least very similar) rubber compound. The only difference that I can discern is the huge difference in thickness.

Sam maybe Kevin at KABUSA can answer the question re the two Technics mats and which tables they came with. Do the mats have the same or different part numbers?

The SL-150Mk2 is an excellent table and was used as you said for bradcast purposes with some having Technics EPA tonearms. Well worth bringing back to original configuration with rubber mat etc. The Orsonic headshell will be a good match for the Syntec TA. Down the road if you should choose you can swap out armboards for a different tonearm. I consider the SL-150Mk2 a sleeper that was good enough for the pros.

They were used for stations on a budget. Very excellent when working right. Studio Light! I'd skip the Denon DL-103, get a Denon DL-301 for this arm if one must have LOMC. This is a good option to use mid mass cartridges on, 1.75-2 grams tracking forces.

I already have a DL-301 Mk2 that I run on my Harman Kardon T60 with the ITO Microrace tonearm. I run it at the recommended VTF of 1.4g and find it a perfect match for 8g effective mass of that tonearm.

The SL-150 Mk2 I bought with the Syntec S-220 I came from a broadcast studio with a Stanton D500 cartridge with the D7AL 0.7 mil conical stylus with a recommended VTF of 3 - 7g. That's why I am considering the DL-103. Compared to what came on it, the DL-103 seems like a better compliance match with a recommended VTF of 2.5g ± 0.3g than the DL-301 Mk2 with a recommended VTF of 1.4g ± 0.2g.

I run that arm/103 combo on my restored/ hot rodded Russco idler drive and am very happy with it.

BillWojo
I’ve run the same combo as Bill, even the same table, although mine is a little less hot rodded

It’s a fantastic combo really enjoyed that combo….

MCM Fan if you read Kents recommendation he's referring to the DL-301 not the Mk2, I haven't checked but the original DL-301 may have a higher recommended tracking force.

Syntec S-220 and DL-103 have been around for a while and as BillWojo and adnick have stated both appear to be a very good match.

The only reference I can find for the DL-301 (non-Mk2) that mentions the recommended VTF is the Vinyl Engine Database. It lists the same recommended VTF for the original as for the Mk2 (1.2 - 1.6g). I assume that means the compliance is similar for both. It does list a lower output voltage (0.3mV vs. 0.4mV) and higher output impedance (40 ohm vs. 33 ohm). So, they didn't just copy the specs from one to the other.

They do list a DL-301 C1 with a higher recommended VTF (2.2 - 2.8g), but it's an entirely different beast (weighs 9.7g over twice the weight of the DL-310 and DL-301 Mk2, has an output voltage of .25mV and an output impedance of 14 ohm).

In any case, these have long been discontinued and I'd prefer to buy new.

I am very interested in this post and have just purchased an SL150 and ordered a Rega armboard for it so I can fit an RB300 into it, has anyone here done this and can you tell me how it sounds?
