Hey folks. My SL 1600 is giving me some problems (tone arm seized but I band aid fixed it off YouTube, rca cables lost a channel, tone arm holder cracked) so I thought I'd look into possibly upgrading. I want a wood plinth with silver components and detailing. I messaged the guy who I bought my SL 1600 off of and told him what I want and he has a Marantz 6100. No price yet though. Is this an upgrade to my 1600?

Those pretty Marantz tables are not great tables. They just look nice. They are not as good as many tables that can be bought for way less money.

Yeah, it is, isn't it? I've never understood the mystique surrounding these turntables. I've had two or three over the years and, after the first one, they hung around just long enough for me to refurbish them and sell them. They're not bad. They're just not all that great and certainly not worth the prices they fetch on eBay. (Check it out. It's unbelievable!)
C.E.C. made essentially the same turntable, some with the addition of a basic suspension system, for a whole lot of other companies like Sanyo, Radio Shack, Taya, White and many others. You can usually pick these up very cheaply so, if the OP is going for a look rather than optimal performance, he might want to look into those.

As Boreas said your not going to be making an upgrade with the Marantz 6100, you'll be paying a premium for a table/name that doesn't deserve it, at best an afterthought to fill in the Marantz catalog that was missing turntables from their otherwise worthy lineup. Save your money and fix the SL-1600, the parts are cheap and easy to find/install.

I have the Marantz 6100, the Marantz 6300 both purchased before the recent "vinyl resurgence" at very low price.
I also have the Technics SL-1600 and the Technics SL-1600 MKII.
The Technics SL-1600 is very worthy of a good overhaul!

Hey guys. The needle began skipping and I realized the tone arm wasn't moving. This was the fix:
Something hit it hard enough to break the tone arm cradle and also "seize" the arm itself. I have absolutely no clue how this happened. Maybe my young kids...
Plus my rca cables have a short in them. That's no big deal but when you take all of the above into consideration, maybe it's time for an upgrade. I don't know much about Marantz TT's so I thought I'd ask. This is the look I'd be going for...

I have owned both, maintained both, and loved both. The Technics is the one I'd want back. The Marantz is a nice entry 1977 belt drive but built by CEC in Japan.

I actually like the Hitachi PS-48, it was a well made table. One feature I really like about the PS-48 was how the tone arm move into place above the lead in grooves of the record. Between the Hitachi or the Technics SL-1600mk1 would be a toughie as I have a soft spot for Hitachi gear in general. I think the Hitachi is a very pretty unit but, I think the Technics has a slight edge on performance.

Hitachi is no Technics SL-1600. Nicer Hitachis OK. Why not buy a parts arm for the SL-1600 or a parts table?
