Technics SL-1600 mk2 vs Luxman PD-264

Hi all,

New to the forum and am after some help deciding on my next turntable...

I have just sold my Apan BFU-121 and looking to upgrade to something of higher quality. I have found two that are in very good condition and I am keen on both. They are Technics SL-1600 mk2 and the Luxman PD-264. Other than that I haven't seen any other in NZ in as good knick....

The Technics is ~$950 NZD and the Luxman is $700 NZD.

If you had the choice and were in my shoes, what would you go for? I've done quite a bit of research and I think I'm leaning towards the Technics because I believe it will appreciate (If it remains in the same condition...), its a more reliable and better built TT and has many more features. On the other hand the Luxman is simply stunning and i love its simplicity.

Even though I like Luxman gear the Technics is the better table. A bit spendy but that might be market conditions in NZ. The Technics with a new cuing belt is a fine automatic table.

@Blue Shadow - I think the NZ market for vintage is always expensive.... I’ve got a 1970’s motorcycle too and parts etc are ludicrous here compared to overseas. I’m guessing with a smaller population and being so distant to the rest of the world, there’s not as much quality retro/vintage from overseas that has survived.

Also curious to who voted for the Luxman and why!?
 
I have had both models you mention. I still have the Luxman.

That is not to say I never appreciated the Technics. It is a fine table and arm combination that has far more boxes checked. Especially if you have the need or desire to change cartridges frequently.

The Luxman has a knife edge bearing on the pivot that is a bit disconcerting. But it works. It has a pedestrian motor installed. But it works. It has a funky auto-lift-at-end-of-play that is outboard and unusual engineering approach to avoid having any added mass on the arm assembly. But it works.

Agree that it comes down to aesthetics. The Luxman is not the only system I own. When used I stay with the Ortofon OM 10 cartridge. I find this combination to be an excellent match. The functionality of the system is simple and straight-forward. Yes, a bit finicky in set up due to the strange auto-lift contraption.

Anyway, I like the Luxman as a package. I also like the Technics but they are everywhere, aren't they?
