Technics SL 1600 MK2 Vs SL 1700 MK2 Vs SL M1 vs etc

I hope no one minds me hijacking this thread, but i was just given an SL-M1 and a friend recommended i bring my questions to this community. Most of the threads are 10 yrs old, so im jumping on this one from March 2025.... First off, i have only gotten a chance to do some brief research, look for a users manual, etc., so I hope that none of my questions turns out to be bone-headed! The SL-M1 is in very good physical condition, to the naked eye. It belonged to my sister-in-law's father, and she says he didnt use it that much. It's been in her closet for 10 yrs. OK, i have essentially no stereo equipment or background, so i brought it home, plugged it into a little 20 year old Denon shelf stereo i had when living in an apartment in the city. It lit up alright and i threw a record on the turntable and tried to play it but couldnt get the arm to drop. That's the 'cueing' button, right? And there's that curved 'bumper' up where the arm attaches that keep the arm up, and im guessing the cueing button causes that bumper to drop and allows the arm to drop and the needle to smoothly land on the record? Seems like an unlikely thing to break, but does anyone have experience or knowledge of that being a common issue? At one point i manually depressed that bumper and the needle of course dropped and i heard music - barely. I had to turn up the volume to 'max' on the Denon and then it played at a reasonable volume. This volume issue is probably not related to the TT, though, i figure?? That is, there's no volume function on the TT itself? And finally, the only other thing i can see that may not work is that when i push the "45" button, nothing appears to happen; the little light indicator does not switch over from "33". I'll probably never play a 45 anyway, but thought I'd mention it. Thanks in advance for anyone with thoughts on the above. I'll try to get back to researching Technics SL-M1m but appreciate any advice, here....

It sounds like you need to find a local AK member or a competent tech to look at it. Otherwise, you'll need to educate yourself on the electronics and electromechanical systems involved and DIY it. You could get the service manual and start a thread here with photos.

Good luck, it sounds like you have a great table to start with, and Technics tables tend to be almost bullet proof with some TLC.
