Technics SL-1600mk2 Help needed

The cue button works irrespective of whether there is a record on the platter of my SL1600mk2, or even a platter on the spindle - but pressing the start button without a record present causes the platter to spin just long enough to do it's optical check (line of sight between the back IR illuminator, and the windows in the platter).

An alternate failure mode... the connection to the arm driver board may need some DeOxit, or could just be a trifle finicky. You need to make sure the cable plug is fully seated - there shouldn't be a visible gap twixt plug & board socket.

The missing plastic piers aren't necessary for normal operation; they're used to lock out the suspension for transport or dj ?'scratching'?. The transit screws use 'em to bolt upper deck & floating base together.

Thanks so much for this thread!

Thanks to this thread I was able to repair my 1600MK2! I too was very fortunate to find this turntable at a thrift store. I had used it a few times manually but since there were a few issues with the over all function I shelved it for a later day. Well, in my effort to manage the pile I broke out the 1600 and decided to tackle the problems.

1) Power button did not work stuck in a pressed position
Just sticky so I disassembled the button mechanism sprayed it with deoxit reassembled , works perfect!

2)Cue and auto start dead
Used a small rubber band from the junk drawer on the motor pulley and large pulley lubed the cue mechanism once again deoxit and now it works like a champ!

The problem I am still running into is the dreaded turntable rumble at higher volumes. I've been adjusting and adjusting and adjusting and still no luck. Some adjustments are better than others but it's still embarrassing as hell! Like passing gas in an elevator...Any recommendations?

Have you tried adjusting the suspension? If you haven't that might fix the problem.Make sure the transport screws are removed.

Damn those blue screws!!!

I finally got around to working on the 1600 mk2 last night and sure enough it was the transit screws causing that nasty rumble. pulled them out balanced the tonearm and wow did that TT come to life! It's currently working with a Marantz 2252 a pair of wharfedale 70's and a pair of wharfedale W60e's sounds so sweet. Thanks for the insight!
 
Scott Thompson over at vinyl asylum rebuilds and repairs this model.

He did one for me and it is my best sounding table.

Well, sometimes I get lucky. I'm really glad you're enjoying yours, as I really do like mine!

But just wait until you play a record that the optical sensor can penetrate. Weird! :wtf:

Hey guys, great thread here. I also have a SL-1600Mk2 TT with the exact same issues...power button no workie, cue does nothing and the arm does not return. I am a bit busy to tear into it now but am book marking this thread and I will post pics to it as i tear into the project.
 
Well, I too have one with a sticky power button, disassembled, cleaned and oiled. Still no go, even put some more tension on the spring, nothing, there is still something that prevents it from going smoothly. Loosen the screws helps a bit but is no solution.
Any advice is welcome.
