Technics SL-1650

I am trying to align a Ortofon OM-10 cartridge on a Technics SL-1650 TT. I have two tools, a Pro-Ject Align It and a Turntable basics alignment tool. I Cannot push the cartridge ahead enough to reach the stylus point on either tool. The headshell on the table is from a Kenwood. Is the Technics headshell different from the Kenwood (shorter?) or is a Ortofon cartridge not a match for this table?

It's the Technics Ovetrhang Gauge. It's located at the bottom of the page on the right side. The oveer hang is suppose to be 52mm.

I have an SL-1500 and an SL-1600. Don`t know if the Kenwood headshell is shorter but I ended up using an inexpensive STANTON H4-S headshell for my "Quest 20" OMB 5E cartridge. Also, if you use a stock headshell, you are probably going to need the brass weight that fits on the top of the cartridge body.

I use one of these:

For Technics, set to 52mm ( 2 3/64"+ )
For Pioneer, set to 49mm ( 1 59/64" + )

I set the sliding pen clip to the desired measurement, then hold that against the gasket at headshell and line up the stylus point with the end of the rule. Works great, especially when you wear a magnifying headlamp.

Congrats on the 1650. I've seen a few 1350s around, even a 1360, but that 1650 seems elusive.

I got mine at Radio Shack. Its called a Depth Gauge

I have a SL-1650 and love it. It's a great turntable & changer. I have all 3 spindles for it which is extremely rare to have!, and also have the original box with all the packing material. I think it is the best changer ever made. It's built just like the SL-1200 series but with stacking options. I love to stack lps & 45s and watch them drop, still fascinating after all these years. Have a Shure M97Xe cartridge on it, nice cartridge for it with the stabilizer brush. The SL-1650 was made in 1977-78 at a cost close to $300, that was alot of money back then.:yes:

I also ordered a new technics headshell and the brass shim. The table is my dads and he is getting itchy to play some of his old LP's.
