Technics SL-1700 MKII cueing system problem

Hi. I have a Technics SL-1700 MKII and i have a big problem with it. The cueing system does not work properly. When the arm falls down with the cueing system activated, at the last moment it makes a sudden movement to the left and scratches the record.
It is not the typical problem with the cueing system. In fact, the belt works well, the arm goes up and down and the automatic return mechanism also works well. But i can't find the problem.
When i use the arm manually, i works great. So the problem is only with the cueing system mechanism.
Maybe it`s just lack of lubrication. Someone has had the same problem?
Thanks

Jose

It's possible the tonearm is sticking to the the cue platform and as the platform lowers it releases the arm abruptly. Or that the cue platform isn't parallel to the record. Check the surface of that platform and clean if needed. Also check and clean the nub that touches it too.

Check that the vta lever behind the anti skate is in the fully locked position. If it is not the arm will drift as it lowers. Awesome table I have 3 and had same problem before myself on one the lever was kinda frozen and seemed locked but wasn't had to really work it to get it to free up

Hi Jose:

Did you ever resolve this issue? I have the same issue with my SL-1700 MKII. None of the recommendations given in this chain work. Please let me know if you found a solution. Regards, Doug

I haven't resolve this. I think it has to be with the autoreturn mechanism. Im still trying. If i make advances i'll post.
Thanks Doug.

that is a common issue with the vta lock lever not being fully locked. make sure to work it back and forth quite a few times and that it is going over fully to the right.

I have same problem and think my vta lock is in place but how do I know (I don't want to force it)?

Any other ideas before I start taking the deck to pieces?

the VTA lever should move freely. one of my tables came with it it frozen in the unlocked position. i kept working it and applying more force until it moved a bit then kept working back and forth until it moved easily. that was a few years ago and i dont recall using any lube but dont really remember. here are a couple picks of the lever the first is unlocked the second locked.
