Technics SL-1700 MKII vs Technics SL-23 Turntable

I've had the Technics SL-23 for the last few years, I've had to clean the speed controls but that's about it. So I am happy with the SL-23. The SL-1700 MKII is for sale and I'd have to get it shipped if I bought it but not far, couple hundred miles. Would the SL-1700 MKII be a noticeably upgrade on the SL-23 or should I just save my money?

The 1700 mk2 is a great turntable, I have the 1800 mk2, same as 1700 but without auto return.

Regarding having it shipped, I would advise against it unless the seller has the original packing materials, highly unlikely though.
 
i have never seen or heard a SL-23 but i do have 2 - 1700mk2's and they are my most used tables and probably the best sounding and most versatile of them. they are the worst looking of all my tables by a long shot but like i said they get used the most

That Thorens TT looks amazing but it's all about the sound, Thanks I've heard nothing but good things about the 1700mk2!!!

I've heard that about Thorens, someone offered me a Thorens TD160 for $550 but that's a bit rich for me and didn't want the hassle of operating it!!

yes it sounds pretty damn good too, i have a shure v15 vxmr with a jico sas stylus on it which is my favorite mm cart, but changing carts on it is a pain thats why i like the 1700mk2 better easy to swap carts and set them up, i have a dynavector 20x2L on one of them and it is hands down the best cartridge i have heard and the 1700mk2 handles it with no problems and the combo has actually given me more then a few WOW moments

I'm very impressed by what I've heard about the 1700mk2!!
 
I still love the Technics. However bear in mind, if the TD-145 tonearm is stock, headshells are expensive (no other option but Thorens, and they're hard to find). If there is an alternative tonearm fitted, better ones like a SME, Grace, or like would skew the balance towards Thorens. And also does it have an intact dustcover, is the cosmetics nice? And how well does it run. Also make sure if you get it that you get the manual from Vinyl Engine (you have to register to download) and follow the instructions for shipping before you haul it home. Just some thoughts pro and con. When the Thorens are good, they are outstanding turntables, but they do have some quirks. And parts tend to be pricey. Technics tends to be less finicky but excellent.

I updated my post and explained some things about the Thorens and pros and cons on owning one. And yes, I have owned both over my life.

That is great advise thanks. I'm registered at Vinyl Engine and it really isn't an easy decision because they are both great choices, with Technics being the safer choice in a way!! I do like the look of the Thorens more, just waiting on the seller to finally post it for sale!!

The guy who sold it to me was great and gave me a few hints on using it!! I have to get a bite to eat then set it up and I'm going to be listening to a lot of vinyl today, lol!!
