Technics SL-1900, any thoughts?

It may affect overhang, etc. It's not a crucial issue, but it's the kind of thing that people discuss on this site. This is the hobby we have. Many would debate whether many of our discussions were all that important. But if there is a question, why not find the answer?

Hmm, I set up the cart in my 1900 with the standard Technics 52mm from gasket to stylus tip measurement. I think I would notice if the cart was a full cm off. :dunno:

It's a cm, but anyway the 1900 is not the question. The manual clearly states it is the same as the other models. The question is the 2000, for which nobody seems to have a manual.
 
From the video I've just seen, the SL-2000 is using a different arm gimbal from the 1900. At first I thought that the arm was the same, but I just found a video on the internet with the 1900 working. The arm itself, (tube) may be the same, but I couldn't tell. I guess we need someone to find a spec sheet for the SL-2000.
 
This may just be my problem. I'm using the specs for the SL 2000 and assuming that they are the same for the SL 1900. I thought that the SL 2000 was the manual version, the SL 1900 automatic. I think I'm right, but I stand to be corrected. It says for the SL 2000 tonearm 22 cm, overhang 1.4 cm. For the SL 16/15/1800 it says tonearm 23 cm, overhang 1.5 cm. So, what's the difference between the SL 1900 and 2000 other than automatic/manual?

Yes, the 1900 was the automatic version, but clearly they were not produced together. The 2000 came first, then a redesign produced the 1900. As Johnda confirms, if you look at pictures of each you can clearly see the gimbals are different. Go over to vintagetechnics and compare the arm of the 1900 with that of the 3200, its successor. It's the same. The 3200 is 9.125". The 2000 arm looks more like that of the SL-20 and 23, which VT lists as having 9" arms. That's questionable, too, but again there are no manuals.
 
The video I saw of the 1900 shows the gimbal is a sideways "U" shape holding the arm in it. My SL2000 does not have this gimbal, so they are different. Someone else mentioned that the SL-1900 had better bearings, but I don't know about that. I just used my SL-2000 a few minutes ago and it tracks beautifully. That's all I can say.

I am really curious to know what you're looking at. Any chance of posting the 2000 and 1900 pics you're talking about?

The below images, borrowed from vintagetechnics.info are in order: SL-2000, SL-1900, SL-3200, SL-D3. Now this is like one of those IQ tests. :D Which one doesn't belong? Do you really think the gimbal on the 2000 looks like the others?

If it's the same brochure I'm thinking of, the 1900 isn't even in it. But the 2000 is. FWIW, the arm bearings/gimbal have an improved design on the 1900. So while very similar, automation is not the only difference.
 
I mentioned in my message #26 that I was using the specs from the SL 2000. Hakaplan said in his reply #27 that the SL 2000 came first, which I didn't know. I assumed that they were produced together and the same specs applied to both and that the SL 1900 was just omitted from the brochure. Live and learn.

Good pictures, hakaplan! They clearly show the differences. I'm thinking about building a wood case for my 2000 to sit in. Might be a fun winter project!
