Just joined, first post! I am in the last stages of a rehab on my SL-1900 from college days. I unstuck the arm rest and lift arm mechanism and got the tone arm adjusted to drop onto the record at the proper place. Thank you, Forums. However, I have had difficulty getting the tone arm to return properly. I have both the service manual and the user manual and have been making adjustments according to the instructions and diagrams (I even double checked to see if I had clockwise and counter-clockwise correct!) The arm worked before I messed with this, BTW. So I know something I did has altered the universe.
I feel a resistance when I manually place the arm near the end of the record and as soon as I let up pressure, it returns to base. When I use the automatics, I see the arm "swaying" horizontally when the needle is in the groove, and when I pick it up, it returns base as well.
Questions:
1) is it possible to turn the adjustment screw under the turntable platter too far in the clockwise direction?
2) would it work to turn that screw all the way back counter-clockwise and start over?
2) should I take it all apart again and check positioning of the hangy down things on the underside of the tone arm assembly
3) should I just keep trying with small adjustment? I have literally turned the screw 1 1/2 times around.
