I just bought this TT from ebay. Was wondering of some good cartridges for it I was thinking of the shure m97te. I only paid $50 for the TT. Any feedback on this recordplayer or what cartridge I should get for it would be helpful.

Don't know how much you are looking to spend, but for about $45, you can put on a Audio Technica AT95E. I put one on mine (SL-1900) and I can't say anything bad about it!

Thanks for the suggestions. My price range for cartridge is 50-75 upgrading from my audio technica lp60 TT.

It is a step above your price range (~$100), but I am enjoying an Ortofon 2M Red on a very similar SL-23.

I purchased it with an Audio Technica CN5625AL. This is not an expensive cart, but it worked just fine. Could be an idea if you are simply looking for something to get you going.

The light is a neon lamp. If you know how to solder, it should be pretty easy to replace. The Vinyl Engine Web site has the service manual for the SL-220, which is the semi-automatic version of your SL-230. You'll find schematics, layout drawings, and parts lists in the manual. You'll have to register at the site before you can download the manual, but registration and the download are both free.

Yes, get the service manual from VinylEngine so you can look up the part number for the strobe bulb. Below are some photos of what you need to do. The "subject" is an SL-220 I have here awaiting parts.

IF the bulb is dim but not out, I believe I saw it either in the service manual or some repair info at VinylEngine that the resistor next to the bulb can go bad and cause numerous problems with the bulb. Apparently this is a well known issue and worth checking into. I have one right now waiting for some general lubing and cleaning with an AT 12sa I got for free just needed a new stylus. I'll be replacing this resistor and possibly some other things underneath when I do. When it's running right it makes some amazingly good music! Do all the right things to check it out and clean it up when you get it and you should have many happy hours listening to it.

Does anyone know where to order the neon lamp. For the technics sl230 im assuming its the same as the sl220.

There may be someone selling them new but I don't know of any. There's a used one on eBay for $9.99 plus shipping, complete with circuit board and resistor. It's for the wrong model so the circuit board is wrong but the bulb and resistor are the same as what you have.

Thanks for the info! Would be my first project soldering or doing anything more than deoxit a receiver.

If it's you first go at soldering I would suggest practicing on some spare bits of wire the same size as what's on the turntable before you have a go at the real thing. It's not rocket science, but you need to get the feel of it, and every Iron is different.
