Technics SL-3200 dustcover hinges issue

Hi everybody,

Just bought my first TT - Technics SL3200. Till now I enjoy every moment listening to it. However, it has miner issue that bothers me. The dustcover hinges are not strong enough to hold it in a raised position. To put the record on I have to take the dustcover off completely, or hold with hand.
Would it be the right thing to replace the hinges? I looked on eBay, though I didn't find any for this specific model. There are lot of them for MK, SL-D, SL-Q and etc. Are 3200's hinges interchangeable with other models? Any idea where could I buy replacement except eBay?

This problem isn't all that uncommon. The springs fatigue over time.

The hinges of that type for any of the S-arm Technics turntables will work. The SL-D2, SL-D3, SL-D5, SL-220 and SL-230 are some options.

Very common, even the tabs breaking off.

One of my plastic tabs that go in the hinge is broke off. Bought it that way. I just lift the cover off and play away.

I read somewhere that you don't want to play it with the cover on anyway.

You'll like the SL-3200. What cartridge are you running on it?

Thanks for the support. It seems like I'm not alone with broken/not working hinges.
Back to the cartridge question. The turntable came with a non-original headshell. Cartridge states "STEREO PHONO CARTRIDGE". The guy that sold it to me swore that the stylus is new and Shure made. Since I'm new to the turntable business, I don't know if it's Shure or not. It sounds good though.
I paid $90 for it, I think it's a fair price.

If you can post a photo of the cartridge, someone here will be able to ID it.

If you have saggy springs on a Technics - assuming the tabs are intact if you have that kind of dust cover - you can re-tension the springs by wedging a small piece of plastic or bit of wire brad under the end of the spring end. That kicks it up a bit to hold the dustcover up.
 
You really should get a new cartridge or at least a stylus. You can't be sure what conidtion the one you have is in.

I agree. What I thought to do is to go the whole nine yards - headshell, cartridge and stylus. I'd like to have a original Technics headshell, I simply like the stock one. About cartridges the discussion could be endless. What would be the decent cartridge + stylus in $50-$60 budget range?
 
Hoah, looks like I found a proper thread to ask you, which exact dust cover lid replacement I should look for the broken/damaged original Technics SL 3200? I found the one but it costs $129 so it's too much. So maybe theere are similar types of lids?
