Technics SL-7 vertical mounting?

Can anyone provide a picture or description of the proper method and or accessories for mounting this tt in the vertical position? Neither the owners or service manual mention this. :D They do recommend to not operate the tt while driving an automobile and I'm OK with that one cause I was thinking I would mount it in the house. I know..right?

It may be in the owners or the service manual.

They'll play like that but it's sub-optimal and dropping the record is a real potential hazard. The stand that table-tops them at an angle is a hot item. I play mine flat and level.

One of the ads for a Technics linear tracker boasts that it can be played upside down - and of course they had a pic. Sounds fun, but it seems like tempting fate these days (digital era w/irreplaceable records and Technics tables).

It may be in the owners or the service manual. Like I said, "It's not". read them both cover to cover.
The stand that table-tops then at an angle is a hot item. That might work for me too! I actually want to put it in a cupboard I'm installing in my audio room. I play mine flat and level.
Picture of the "angle stand"??

I've seen them on epay. You could make something similar yourself.
I figured on having to fabricate whatever it is. Just would like to get a glimpse of the original but I guess I'll use my imagination.

They looked like right triangles, with the long side laid down on the table. Angle iron-looking aluminum? There were nubs(?) or something on the table sides to hold it in place.

Will all of the SL models do this, or only some? Don't really want to mount my SL5 vertically or at an angle, but I'm just vaguely curious.

oh yeah :smacksforehead: but you could use the others at a 45 degree angle.

The biggest problem is getting the lid to stay up, and the hinge tension screws can be a problem after all this time.

Here 'tiz;

AWESOME. Those ARE good looking. I can see why they fetch the $$.
Thanks!

There are several models that can mount vertically. They are pretty well discussed on vinylengine. All are Linear trackers.

Mitsubishi does make a couple good ones. LTv5 (HEAVY about 30 lbs and has legs) and LT 640. They have standard cartridge mounting but the LTv5 does not have a Dynamic (spring) tonearm and it needs to be very level and setup is more critical.

The Sharp/Optonica version says it plays both sides. OMG how? no clue. Must be very involved mechanicals. The Technics are 10 pounds in a 5 pound sack too. Built for linear tracking and fully automatic but only the footprint of an album jacket or smaller if angled or vertical. Mitsu's are wider.

None of them had the "market lifespan" of conventional tts. Showed up late and died quick in favor of CD's. Because of that they often got shelved and are in nice shape. Also they are harder to find locally on CL or in thrifts. More of an ebay item. DICEY! I swore I'd never ship another tt but I made an exception this time and got lucky.

Several Technics linears that I've worked on would definitely not work well that way. The arm is more or less counterweighted like any ordinary radial arm and would have close to zero VTF if you stood them up on edge.

yep they're all dynamically balanced (spring loaded tone arms)

Not all of them. Besides, when they're playing level, the mass of the arm is added to the VTF. When vertical, it isn't. You'd need a considerably larger adjustment range than is provided to compensate for that.

now that you mention it, I do believe I remember seeing the counterweight. The adjustment just pulls a little more tension on the spring. I actually checked that adjustment on my SL-5 and it gives +/- 0.25 grams, or pretty darn close to it.
