Technics SL-B3 or Rega Planar 2?

Hello, I'm new to this forum.

I was wondering if you guys could help me with some stuff. I have a Technics SL-B3 turntable which I bought about 6-7 years ago now. It has a Technics 2700 cartridge. I've never had any problems with it, apart from the light going on it, which i can put up with.
I also have my dad's old turntable from the 70s/80s, an original Rega Planar 2 (I say original as I've read they've made new ones) which has an A&R Cambridge cartridge (i'm not sure of the exact model) but no stylus. It might need a new belt as well but i'm not sure yet.

I was just wondering, which of these is the better turntable (soundwise)? would it be worth trying to find a replacement stylus or a new cartridge for the Rega? And if so which cartridges would you recommend? (I was thinking of the AT95E but if there's something better for around that price please tell me)
Thanks! :music:

Welcome Tipper,

Sound wise one may not be better than the other. They will almost certainly sound different but no one can say which one you would prefer. I'd get the Rega going and give it a listen to see what you think. Yes, the AT95E will work fine for not much $$. The original cartridge may also be worthy of a new stylus, if available, but I am not familiar with it.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I'll give the Rega a try, I found a replacement stylus online for the A&R cart so i think i'm gonna get that and try it out.

You've found one if the holy grails in cartridge/tonearm combinations. That Rega/AR Cambridge cartridge mix is said to be one of the greats. I believe replacement styli can be found, and that should leave the AT crying the wake, and I'm saying that as a big fan of the AT95e.

My dad was happy to hear that haha, and yeah I ended up ordering a replacement stylus for it. Looking forward to testing it out!
