Technics SL-D2 Dust Cover Compatibility

Hi all --

Girlfriend's dad has a beloved SL-D2 with a dust cover that needs replacement. He's keen on a hinged cover instead of a set-on, so I've been trying to source a used and/or broken D2 to harvest the dust cover (and, hoping against hope, an interesting cartridge) for him as a surprise, as his birthday is in about a month.

Since LPs have become way more popular in the last decade, and especially in the pandemic, as well as inflation, D2s have become scarce in my area, and the prices have increased. So, I'm wondering:

What other units' dust covers from the same era are compatible with the D2? That would include both Technics- and MCS-branded units.

he says The models which use that size and type dustcover are the SL-Q2, SL-Q3, SL-D1, SL-D2 and SL-D3.

says the SL-D1, SL-D2 and SL-D3 lids will swap. It's not just the xy dimensions but the height is important as many Technics lids are shorter.

I'm pretty confident I have a lid from D3 on a D2 and I compared it with an original lid years ago.
I don't remember seeing anything about the MCS line, but I follow your thinking.

Found this because I might need an SL-D2 cover also. The above information is not correct. The cover is noticeably higher than on some of those tables, particularly the P-mount models. From personal experience I know what they look like. Would they be OK anyway is what I'm wondering. Probably not is what I'm guessing.
 
If they're 'higher' then they have more clearance? That doesn't seem like it would be an issue.

Anyway I have an SL-Q2 and I believe the dust covers to be identical between them. Be careful as the plastic tabs that fit into the TT's hinges are a common failure point.

EDIT: My now-spare table has been put away for so long I forgot the model.

There's an SL-Q210 sitting 10 minutes from where I am. It was previously mine. The cover is very low, only just clearing the low P-mount arm. I think with the full SME-style arm on the D2 it could be a problem.

(I'm pondering picking up a local SL-D2 to see what it's like compared to my Hitachi. The price is OK but its cover is an absolute state)
 
I missed the 'than' in your previous post - reading hasn't been my strong suit this morning. Maybe you can use the dust cover's condition as a bargaining chip in price negotiations.
AFAIK the SL-D2 and SL-Q2 (The model that I actually own...) are quite similar with the main difference being a lack of Quartz-locking in the former, and I can definitely recommend the Q2.

The thing is there's nothing wrong with the Hitachi, I'm just deep into this hobby now.. Should really sell my spare Thorens first so at least there's storage space for the Technics in this small flat (apartment).
 
I was able to find a D2 at a reasonable price with a pretty clean cover, and for my girlfriend's dad, a spare parts unit. But nice to see the activity here and info about compatibility! Best of luck, TerryMarmite
