Technics SL-D2 Stopped Spinning

Hi everyone, I'm new to troubleshooting turntables and electronics in general and would like some help.

Just before my sl-d2 stopped spinning, it would speed up really fast while playing and wouldn't stop unless I switched off the power from the wall. Now it seems to have died on me, as it does not spin at any selected speed, nor does the strobe light turn on.

I just need some advice on how I should go about 'fixing' it, or at least identifying the problem. I've already tried using deoxit on the speed/pitch controls and that has not seemed to have done anything.

There's a service manual for the SL-D2 over at the Vinyl Engine. Free download if you sign up. I suspect that some 50 cent component in the speed control circuitry has gone bad.
