Technics SL-D2

Hey all,

Years ago I bought a Technics SL-D2 turntable. It had what I think was a technicraft tc2000 cartridge.

I bought an audiotechnica cartridge and it was totally wrong.

Can somebody reccomend a good replacement needle and cartridge for this unit? Always loved the sound of the technicraft. Shure always seemed pretty good too, but I'm not too particular.

The original one broke entirely. The one I bought was the wrong plug. I think the one on the turn table has four little round connectors it should plug it, and the mounting was different too on the one I bought.

If you could post some pics, that would help. I looked at your model turntable online and it looks like the tonearm has standard 1/2" mounting. But maybe you have a P mount adaptor in the headshell. A few cartridges are P mount and plug in to a P mount tonearm or a P mount adaptor. The majority of cartridges are 1/2" mount.

Need pics of the new cartridge also to determine why it won't work. Your table is designed to work with the usual standard 1/2" mount most cartridges use.

This one doesn't have the rail on top for the nut and bolt.

It's a P-mount. These were designed to take the guess work out of installation for consumers, some decks incorporate this in their arms, yours does not.

You could purchase an adapter to fit this to your arm, but my recommendation would be return it and order one with a standard 1/2" mount.

Not real familiar with your table and arm, the cartridge compliance needs to be in the ballpark to match your arms mass.

Most likely not an ultralite or heavy arm so something like the Audio Technica AT95E would be a good start and won't break the bank. Many here have raved about it's performance to dollar ratio, and I have to admit it's a pretty sweet cart.

I have others I prefer but they are considerably more expensive.

AT95E would be a nice cart for that table. If you wanted to reuse your old cart, LPGear has genuine new TC3000 stylus but they are a bit pricey.
