Technics SL-J110R

hi! does anyone know anything about this tt? it's belt drive, uses a technics EPS-24CS conical diamond styli on a mm cartridge. unfortunately it's fully automatic, and the arm doesn't have and possibilities to adjust, no adjustable tracking force or antiskating...
i can get it for about 32$. is it worth the money? and is it a step up from a philips tt with a ceramic cartridge, also automatic, but my philips has adjustable tracking force?

Find you something like a Technics SL-D1, 2, or 3, their DD and alot heavier. Can be found for about the same money, and sound almost as good as my SL-1700. Just my 2 cents.

yeah,i'm from croatia, so the shipping costs are high. and also, theese tt's that you suggested, i can't find them for that price.

Well, you're on a budget, I can certainly understand that!!! If this you're only option, make the best of it. I've found with my Technics SL-D3 that isolation dampening made a noticable difference. I mounted it on a 39LB. concrete paving stone with a layer of cork then a 16x16 floor tile on top of that. I then added 3lbs. of modeling clay to the inside of the plinth. I could tell a difference. RCA cables and tonearm wires can also be upgraded pretty cheaply.

I'd suggest to let it pass, 'cause that isn't a good Technics model. If you want a proper Technics in that form factor, I'd recommend to at least go for an SL-5.

Whether it would be a step up to your Philips, is debatable, I guess - but an SL-J110 definitely isn't worth US$ 32 used.

Manfred, it's not a linear tracker. That's an error in that vintagetechnics.info (and there are other errors in that chart, as well). It's a standard tonearm cheapo, late '90s model that was made for a number of mfrs including Technics, Teac, Sansui, etc.

Uhm, yeah, Howard, I know, it isn't - but I didn't write that the SL-J110 was one anyway, did I? I just wrote that I'd recommend at least an SL-5, if the thread starter wanted a proper Technics in the same form factor (i.e. midi sized), 'cause that would quite a bit better. The SL-J110 in my book rather belongs to the "toy class record players" similar to an AT-PL50, Denon DP-29F et cetera...

Sorry, I misunderstood you. When you said same "form factor" and then recommended the SL-5, I took that to mean linear tracker rather than compact sized.

he's been using a ceramic cartridge and has switched to a magnetic cartridge. the phillips turntable is part of an all-in-one system. he has un-plugged the turntable from the all-in-one, installed a magnetic cartridge, and has plugged it into an external amplifier. i checked on shipping to croatia. a 20 pound package from my place to croatia is almost $90, not counting any extras, usps. maybe some of you who live outside the USA could ship him one for less. i don't know much (anything) about croatia, but hi-fi may be hard to find there!
