Technics SL-J2 stylus dropping onto record instead on lowering slowly

I purchased a used Technics SL-J2 about 2 years ago. It worked fine foe a while then started having problems starting up when the Start button was pushed, tracking issues, etc. I took the cover off, lubricated all of the mechanisms and replaced the belt. It is now starting up and tracking great, HOWEVER, the stylus is no longer lowering smoothly, it just drops the needle down appearing to bounce when it reachea the record. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this and how it can be fixed. I have called 2 TT repair shops in the area and both have said they will not work on this model. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
