Technics SL-L25 Linear Automatic - tracking problem - any help?

longplay

Member
Just bought at a yard sale a Technics SL-L25, DC Servo, Linear Automatic Turntable.
Problem: set for 30CM, run full size LP, initial 1/2"tracks OK, then linear arm stalls and skips.
Set for 17CM, run the same full size LP, tracks great from 17CM (mid LP)
start to finish.
Is the linear arm binding or something at the start? Can it be fixed?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!!!!
:tears:

It certainly sounds like the sled is binding, the exact same symptoms occurred on my SL-5 linear. The grease turns to glue after 25+ years. I don't know what it will take on yours as far as disassembly, perhaps a little may be required, then clean off the rail that the sled rides on with isopropyl alcohol, and re-apply a light lubricant.

I'm not familiar with this particular tt, but I have a Technics SL-Q6 and was able to simply use a small rubber band to substitute for the worn belt. (Just in case you can't find the actual belt).

Thanks for all the input.
NashvilleBill - your advice did the trick. The old grease on the gears, pivots and rails was like rubber cement. Cleaned it all off with alcohol and relubed - runs great!:
