Technics SL-Q2 Tonearm Problem, it's binding...

You need a JIS screw driver set. Phillips will slip and strip.

I cannot think of another way to remove and verify that the silver bracket holding the tone arm can be adjusted / manipulated to center it in the circular housing to prevent the binding and rubbing.

Thank you @SmileyFaceEQ !

Finally got the stripped screw off. Yep, once that screw's off, I was able to lift off the plate gently, and had access to the screw that's supporting the bottom bearing of the tonearm, turned it twice around and loosened it, flipped the tt over, reseated the tonearm, locked it, turned the tt over again, re-screwed it over the bottom bearing. Turned the tt over and checked the tonearm and now it's free to move side-to-side, there's no binding anymore!

Took a couple of photos for posterity. All I needed was access to the screw highlighted in green in the first picture attached. That's the screw holding the bottom bearing of the tonearm. There's no need to take any other parts off. I should've left the AntiSkate as it was, no need to take any screws off there. Same with the tonearm lift, just leave it, no need to take the c-clip or any other parts off there, leave them alone. You DO have to take the spring off from the L-shaped brass arm of the AntiSkate thingie, 2nd picture highlighted in green.

Another thanks to @SmileyFaceEQ , I couldn't have done it without your words of wisdom and encouragement!!!

Well, I am very happy for you! Feels great when you fix the problem and have a functional unit again.

You now know a lot about these units, keep your eyes peeled for them and keep fixing them.

Q LINE are nice tables and when running properly are hard to beat. Surely no modern consumer grade table would come close.

You are absolutely right about getting to know these units! I had to open her up a few times after my last post, I noticed it was stil a bit too tight, had to open up the screw a bit by bit until it was just right. At one point, I had it too loose and the tonearm was moving a bit, can't have that. I'm listening to a test record, so far so good.

Saving one vintage turntable at a time...

I just grabbed a pair of technics turntables this afternoon (q2 and a q202) and this thread came in handy. It was precisely the exact same situation.

The bottom bearing had been knocked out of position at some point and the tonearm was skipping in an infinte loop due to rubbing of the bearing housing against the plinth circular housing.

Problem solved in 5 mins.

1. After removing bottom cover take a photo for refence.

2.Release the antiskate spring gently.

3.Remove the brass screw holding the arm return mechanism and lift away. Use a JIS screwdriver to avoid stripping.

4. Lightly losen the flathead silver screw revealed by removing the plate about 2/3 of a turn and reposition tonearm gently until seated / centered in the bottom bearing.

5. Reinstall plate, screw, antiskate spring, bottom and Test for tracking.

Nice.
