Hey all!

I have a chance to buy a technics SL1200 mk2 w/ a Ortofon Bronze cartridge as my first nice turntable for listening purposes. It has not been used to DJ. The price is $450. Looking for opinions on the turntable and combo and whether or not it’s a fair deal.

I'd say it's a good deal if the turntable is in good condition and has only been used at home, especially when you're also getting a relatively upmarket cartridge. The 2M Bronze should be quite well suited to the SL1200 arm. Having said that, the value also depends on how much use the Bronze stylus has had - do you have an estimated number of hours? If it is well-worn and you need to replace the stylus immediately, that will itself require considerable outlay, although you could replace it with the more economical Blue or Red stylus.

P.S. I assume you mean the 2M Bronze MM cartridge rather than the Quintet Bronze MC cartridge, which is even more upmarket.

I’ll ask the guy and report back.

Sounds like a very decent deal to me. Average price on a preowned 1200Mk2 is $500, this is for a table in very good functional condition with minor signs of use. At that rate you are getting the cartridge thrown in for free and this isn't a cheap cartridge. Agree with Rebellovw that the seller is a discerning person who didn't settle for a cheap DJ cartridge. Doubt this one will go unsold for long, check it out quick and my guess you will be the new owner.

Thanks brother!

Make sure it has the 5mm thick original Technics rubber mat and not one of those thin slipmats. You can improve the sound later with some KAB mods, especially the tonearm damper. That damper works wonders with certain cartridges. If the stylus is in good shape, you will have a hard time finding something else at that price that sounds as good.

Thanks man! WIll keep in mind when checking it out.

The 2M Bronze on a Technics arm is a really nice combination. Glad to hear you're moving on this! If it all checks out OK, you'll have a really good deck. Bullet-proof, AND it will sound good.

This is a great deal. Good thing about SL-1200 MK2, there are parts still available. NOS Technics parts. Sliders, spindle assemblies, tonearm parts, etc. Plus, competent folks that know how to work on it. So, you can keep the table in good working order, for a long time.

Have a funny feeling someone offered the seller more $. Know it's spilled milk but when you see a great deal tell the seller I'm on the way NOW!

Yea. I’m new to all this so I was afraid to pull the trigger until I asked you guys. I live in LA though so pretty good deals pop up all the time. Hopefully I’m quicker on the next one.

You spent the time when the question was asked 2M Bronze or Quintet Bronze. That time could have gone to buying the unit so with your new found knowledge of how quick the good stuff flies away, you can move more quickly after the next go buy it recommendation. Hope it works out. Fortunately as you say you are in a target rich environment.
